40 cent
Hey guys,I have been doing kyokushin karate for around 2 years now, and have recently been training quite intensively. i am really enjoying it, and have done a few full contact torunaments, and freestyle fights. being in australia, events arent exactly plentiful, in particular with the spilt of the kyokushin organisations.i was wondering if you could give me a quick list of what other martial arts compete with full contact rules, either full contact or padded. i am looking at fighting other styles to expand my skills and also to gain more experience. so yeah, if you guys give me the names of what other styles fight full contact (obviously thai and kickboxing will be on the list later) but yeah, just want as many avenues to research as possible, id like to fight once a month.thanks for any help, grant
Meguro
If you'd like to stick to the Kyokushin knock-down format, obviously you can choose from the several factions. Widening the circle also consider Kyokushin spin-offs (ie. styles founded by former Kyokushin Karateka): World Oyama Karate;Ashihara Karate; Enshin Karate; Seidokaikan Karate (K-1); Daidojuku Karate. UseoForce
If you really want to "expand your skills", try MMA fighting. If it works, use it!If not, throw it out!

40 cent
yeah i have definately considered trying the other factions, but the others done seem to offer a lot of tournaments either :s i havent been able to get a hold of the matsui group as yet tho...i will do a bit of research on those kyokushin spin offs, thankyou for that.as for the boxing and kickboxing, im having trouble finding a reputable and good boxing teacher, so its not something i want to do unless i have complete faith in the instructor.mixed martial arts i havent looked into much. i was wondering, do most of these competitions comprise of grappling? coz i havent had any experience in this. it seems, only off impressions, that mma still arent fully developed in australia, so the tournaments seem kinda 'underground.'i went to one competition, and there was a couple of styles who fought kyokushin fighters...i think one was wing chun??? would that be possible? keep the different possible styles and advice coming, thanks, grant
40 cent
what about this styles: Wado Ryu, Shito Ryu, Goju Ryu, Shotokan...do any of them focus on full contact fighting?
y2_sub
All of the styles mentioned above are point sparring oriented ( except for goju i guess ) , however , they might fight full contact within the walls of dojo . I had the same lack of competition problem before , so I joined kickboxing for a while and fought under their rules , if you are a good kyokushin karate-ka , then you won't find any problem with fighting kickboxers . aefibird
I'd suggest for you to try kickboxing or full-contact TKD, or see if your instructor would be willing for you to (help?) organise local competitons with your club and others in the area. It might not be just what you're looking for, but it would be a start.what about this styles: Wado Ryu, Shito Ryu, Goju Ryu, Shotokan...do any of them focus on full contact fighting? There are clubs in the styles on that list who fight full contact (my dojo is one example) but they tend to be the minority rather than the majority, as most of those styles tend to be more into points or semi contact competition fighting.
