Well its that time again... my next test is to break through 2 boards with a hook kick. I have a pretty effective kick, I just don't know if its that powerful. I don't want to kick the board and get a painful DINNNNG! Kinda like a cartoon when someone hits a metal object with a bat! Any tips?

How are you going to execute the kick ...

from lead foot?

Step behind lead foot hook kick?

Spin hook kick?

I've done a 3 board with the last 2 techniques no problem. There is more momentum behind your kick with each. Just remember to follow through while incorporating that hip thrust into your kick....and to work on those hooks with a heavy bag. Hook kick until you find yourself comfortable with the power you are using! Good Luck!!

Just practice on a kicking shield or bag, you'll know when you've got it you'll get a nice thud, thats all you need and right on the line, it's just a case of cooordination and well the hardest bit is accuracy. Give it a good dig and don't lock your leg out, bend it into the boards.

Do you have people holding the boards or do you use a holder?

I ususally execute the step behind that KickChick mentioned, or a skip hook. I'm able to generate more speed that way.

I try to stay away from the spin hook as well.

Hi everyone, I've just arrived here, nice too meet you!

Why would you not do it with a spinning hook?

You just have to practice your accuracy, once you've got that right, you only have to throw your leg out, don't even have to worry about if it's got enough power, it will just slice through it.

make sure you keep up on the ball of your foot on the supporting leg..the spin and speed afterwards will make you go through..no problem..very powerful kick when done properly!!!

When doing a hook kick with the lead foot I like to step in front rather than behind with the rear leg. I find it easier to get my hip turned over properly that way. Try both ways and tell us what you think.

Back leg with a step is more powerful, while the front leg like you mentioned is faster.

I perfer to step behind then kick. That way, your hip is almost already turned over where it's supposed to be. It generates a bit more power, too (for me, anyways).

I also do the spinning hook kick, but I think lead leg hook kicks are quicker and less "telegraphed".
