I don't mean to dump on anyone here, and I recognize the person posing the question is a new guy, but this is one of those questions that tends to cycle through here rather repeatedly. I would like to advocate the use of the SEARCH button. Using the SEARCH button, in about 2 minutes, I found the following threads with this exact same question worded a little differently:

"How fast did you get your black belt?"

http://www.karateforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=17993&highlight=long+black+belt

"How long SHOULD it take for your black belt?"

http://www.karateforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=19948&highlight=long+black+belt

"How long did it take for your black belt?"

http://www.karateforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=13870&highlight=long+black+belt

"My friend got his brown belt in less than a year in TKD"

http://www.karateforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=19650&highlight=long+black+belt

"Just how long does it take....?"

http://www.karateforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=17221&highlight=long+black+belt

"How long did it take to get your black belt?"

The moral of the story: SEARCH before you ask. For those who have been around for a while, when someone asks a tried and true question, refer them to a previous thread. The same questions get rather old after a while. :karate:

Be prepared for a lot of "it depends on the style" and "getting a black belt shouldn't be a goal, it should be incidental." I agree with both statements.

Aikido takes roughly 10 years to earn a black belt (I did it for about 1.5 years and I only went up in "rank" once.

Holy Crap And I thought my style took forever although in the long run I guess it does. We go Tuesdays and Thrusdays nights for 3 hours a night. On Saturday we have an optional class but basicaly if you were to attend all 3 classes and only miss about 5 per month you could rank up every 3 months but don't let that fool you.

Once you get 1st degree Black belt in our system you wait 2 years for 2nd degree training.

After 2nd degree you wait 3 years for 3rd.

and so on so on.....For every degree you wait that many years and at the 9th degree black belt waiting 10 years would be CRAZY but it takes about 45 some years from day one in our training to achieve 10th degree. But in our system only 6th degree and higher are allowed to actualy leave and create thier own Dojo...so those that want to teach have to wait about 22-25 years depending on the Classes you miss.

*sighs and takes a breathe* the bad thing is im dedicated and really wanting to open up a dojo I work along side our Grandmaster a 10th degree and I love it but I have about 9 years in and I purposely held myself back from testing for skill reasons and morale reasons but most other dojos in our area take bout 5 years to get 1st black and they test every 2 years for the next degree no matter what. So when you compare my style to thiers....lol I have to wait a while but its well worth it.

To become the greatest warrior, one needs to train beyond the physical and into the spiritual becoming supernatural. It is then that the warrior will know that he is indeed not the greatest, but just awakened.

You can earn one today. Send me $3,000 dollars and I will send you a $10 dollar black belt. :-)

K, so that would be a McDojo..........

I was in a school with an 8 week testing cycle (20 years ago) so it took me about 2 years. My student test quarterly, 12 week cycle. So, the average student would now take about 3 years. Give or take.
