What exactly do you mean by sword style? Do you mean like an art such as Iaido or Kendo, or a type of sword such as a katana or Wakizashi. Even did you mean like a samurai sword vs a sword vikings used, or Euros used?

Sword styles are normally catagorised by blade type. Taking fencing as an example, epee is different to sabre because of the way the weapon is used and how you score. The same is true of chinese weapon styles. The short stubby broad sowrd is used differently to the long sword and is catagorised to correspond. One is a chopping weapon because of its blade design, the other os a slicing and pointing weapon because of its design.

it sounds like he is an anime fan... he's wondering if different schools have been brought into existence and are decipherable by their techniques. For all you anime fans, think rurouni kenshin.

For you non-anime fans, think kung fu. when you see upright stances, speed and longer range techniques, you think longfist. when you see the upright stance, circling footwork and palms out, you think bagua. When you see stomping and powerful short range techniques, you think baji. This is what he is talking about. Are there sword styles that can be categorized in a similar way.

My guess is that you can no longer do that. Why? most of the once existent styles are now dead.

well, in fencing, swords are classified by how they are used, the scoring and the valid targets...

we have the Epee, Saber and Foil...

The stronger swordsman does not always win.
