karatekid1975
Hey all,Although I'm not new to the tourny stuff, I haven't been to one in two years (competing that is). I am doing forms and breaking. I was going to do sparring, but I injured my hand during my test last week, so that's out (the use of my right hand for breaking is out, too ).Anyways, this will be a WTF TKD type of tourny. For my dojang, red belts and above have to break two boards at each station. There will be three stations. Is there a good combo that I could use with an injured hand, and kicks that will "wow" the judges (and without me injuring something else LOL)? One of my instructors adviced that the more "showy" it is, the better the score. I don't think he ment really super high spinning flipping ... whatever kicks, but he ment put on a good show.So if you have any ideas for me, thanks in advance Laurie F
Sam
"showy kicks" if your not looking for the really spinning stuff - a 360 jumping side off the spot might work.... or a narabam.....errr..... a good clean jumping spinning back kick looks good.....front leg side kick - as this has little body weight behind it and so is down to kicking power only - therefore "showy" in a way....hope that helps. karatekid1975
Thanks Sam. I forgot about the front leg side kick But I decided on a flying side kick over people (that would be pretty impressive for a 30-something ), so I don't know if I should do both. One break I did at a demo (two boards, three boards, two boards in order) were done by a spear hand, immediately bring a back elbow straight back through the three boards with the same arm, followed by a jump spin outer crescent. The outer crescent holders have to hold directly above the spear hand holders, and the spear hand holders have to be steady enough not to flinch as the outer crescent comes around.Aodhan There are some people who live in a dream world, and there are some who face reality; and then there are those who turn one into the other.-Douglas Everett, American hockey player
karatekid1975
I totally agree about the holders. That's how I hurt my hand. I was trying to do a reverse punch through two boards at my test, and he (the holder) flinched. I know I can break two boards with a punch (I did it twice in the past with my boyfriend holding).Anyway, that combo is cool. I'll put that down on my list of combos to use (except the spear finger thing LOL) Laurie F
niel0092
A 360 round kick would work nicely too. Just make sure you get your toes back "Jita Kyoei" Mutual Benefit and Welfare
karatekid1975
I thought about doing that. That is easy with one board as a speed kick, but I have to break two. That might hurt a bit if my timing is off LOL. I'm also "coaching" in sparring afterwards, so I can't hurt myself LOL. Laurie F

Generally just as impressive, you don't have to worry about your toes, and it usually has more power because of the addition of the glutes to the muscle equation.Aodhan There are some people who live in a dream world, and there are some who face reality; and then there are those who turn one into the other.-Douglas Everett, American hockey player
karatekid1975
That is actually not a bad idea. I'm adding that one to the list Laurie F
karatekid1975
Here's how I did .... I got 2nd in breaking by "default." There was no one breaking at my age and rank, so they put me up against someone half my age. She did all her breaks, but some took her a couple of tries. I did two out of three breaks. I used a backward elbow strike, which I never did for breaking before (I always used the regular elbow strike). It took me three tries to do it. My elbow is all purple LOL. I did a front kick that took me a couple of tries. And I tried a flying side kick, but couldn't do it.Part of it was because I did have bad holders. And I had the smallest guys (I couldn't pick my holders) to hold for the flying side kick on top of my timing being off I did get 3rd for forms, though Laurie F
