Maddwraph Posted July 25, 2005 Posted July 25, 2005 how does this shin condioiniong thing work? is it only so you cant feel the pain? or does it toughen your skin to protect the bone inside. i love the idea, but it this healthy for the human body? i heard something about thailand having a large shin cancer rate because of this. Im brasilian, but live in the united states. Really enjoying martial arts.
elbows_and_knees Posted July 25, 2005 Posted July 25, 2005 it builds tolerance. you will always feel hard contact. after a while, you learn to tolerate it. Also, bone density is developed. When excessive weight (weight training) and / or impact is applied to a bone, it adapts by becoming more dense.I've never heard of any confirmed reports of a thai boxer developing shin cancer... I think it is more similar to skin cancer - induced by excessive exposure to UV rays.
Menjo Posted July 25, 2005 Posted July 25, 2005 I wonder i have done alot and still do shin conditioning however like other skills and parts of the body say if you stop for along time, will the shin become soft and again or is the adaption permanent? Muaythaiboxer Posted July 25, 2005 Posted July 25, 2005 the feeling will come back after a long time but the bone stays just as hard. Fist visible Strike invisible
ivette_green Posted July 26, 2005 Posted July 26, 2005 My Sensei said something about kicking a sand-bag 100 times lightly with each leg every day to toughen up the shins. He's insane and old though, not to be trusted at all... "Don't tell me what I can't do."
elbows_and_knees Posted July 26, 2005 Posted July 26, 2005 he sounds like he knows what he's talking about. Perhaps there is a method to the insane man's madness...
Muaythaiboxer Posted August 1, 2005 Posted August 1, 2005 lol he may be crazy but he got it right the sand bags are widely used in thailand Fist visible Strike invisible
Enviroman Posted August 1, 2005 Posted August 1, 2005 In my mantis school we condition shins by kicking each other in the shins...let me tell you I pretty much hate it. I get huge welts on my shins. I haven't bruised up too badly yet, but I'm sure I will. I don't have a heavy bag to practice on. Anyone have any other suggestions?
elbows_and_knees Posted August 1, 2005 Posted August 1, 2005 just keep doing what you are doing and keep plentyof jow handy.
