Persuading parents

I want to take kung fu in addition to what I'm already taking. I currently do 5 hours of karate a week, and kung fu would add another 3.

Here's the problem...

If mom and dad say no, it's a definite NO

If just mom says no, I still might be able to

So far, mom has said no. She says I'll be to busy with high school next year, and that I should do something useful with that time.

How do you think I should lay out my sales pitch?

P.S. I'm using karate for my PE credits next year, so I'm not worried about not being able to do karate. I just want to take kung fu. I still have about 2 months of vacation left too.

lol - say it will help you gain a "deeper understanding" of the Martial Arts world and help with your Karate practice..... dunno really.....

I would not suggest that you take both. You're a bit young to be taking two styles at once in my opinion. They will most likely bleed into each other and that's not something you want at your stage of development. After you get a good 10 years under your belt then cross training may add value. 'Till then I suggest you stick with one style. The benefits will be huge.

The only two things that stand between an effective art and one that isn't are a tradition to draw knowledge from and the mind to practice it.

I agree in some ways.... however it depends on what u want out ofthe trianing..... if you dont want them to bleed together and learn 2 distinct martial arts then wait... however if you just want to pick and choose different areas then cross trainign at any stage may work... the only problem maybe an understanding of the application of different moves, and how they relate to each other.

Okay guys, I've decided to wait for a while. I probably won't train in another style until I get to college, but I will still train in Shotokan in college.

Well, thanks

Just wondering, what do you think of me taking Judo next summer (just for the summer) That can't bleed into my karate (I think) and it will augment my takedowns in kumite. What do you guys think?

Adding a bit of Judo would be good, just to get an understanding of what grapplers do and how they do it. Just make sure your karate foundation is solid before you cross train.

Oh, and if you end up waiting untill college to try another art, no biggie. College is all about new experiences and ideas. You'll love it 100 times more than high school!
