Bruce WillPete7 Posted July 3, 2005 Posted July 3, 2005 Does anyone here (who trains in kung fu, and does not utilize karate or muy thai in there fighting or training) Believe themselves to be Masters? If so why? Have you traveled the temples of China and learned from many kung fu experts? Have you trained yourself hard enough to be confident in any situation? Do you think Kung fu is an effective style? If not how long do you think it will take to become a "master" Empty your mind, be formless, shapeless like water. When you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup; when you put water into a bottle, it becomes the bottle; when you put water into a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Sam Posted July 3, 2005 Posted July 3, 2005 I imagine, you will get al ot of people talkign about what a master is and very few saying that they believe themselves to be a master... usually its by other's recognition any way.
Adonis Posted July 4, 2005 Posted July 4, 2005 my friend who is a 7th dan doesn't consider him self a master and I have seened him theory, knowledge, and applicaiton of tehcniques clown many "masters" in other styles. but he still considers him self a student not a master. Its a mental thing master means mastry of technique when some one thinks they are master level it has a phycological effect. Even helio gracie because of certain politics in bjj but also about humility war a bjj blue belt brazilian jiu-jitsu's first belt after white.
fallen_milkman Posted July 4, 2005 Posted July 4, 2005 Yeah, I have noticed most of the best masters refuse the title in everyday conversation. My teacher, for example, is a technically a master rank by our style's titles but prefers to go by his previous title of Sifu. 36 styles of danger
CadetRay Posted July 4, 2005 Posted July 4, 2005 i agree Zhu Hu Drangon Lion Kung Fu & Sports Asst.http://www.geocities.com/zhusifu/http://www.whitecrane.ws/
granmasterchen Posted July 4, 2005 Posted July 4, 2005 I think the title of master is something that true masters wont or don't accept it is a title that is granted by others when refering to that individual That which does not destroy me will only make me stronger
GTF Posted July 4, 2005 Posted July 4, 2005 my sifu's wife who also practises the same style refered to him as a master once but then said that he does not like to use the title. Thou shalt not follow a multitude to do evil~Exodus 23:2Violence, even well intentioned, always rebounds upon oneself.~Lao TzuAnd mankind is naught but a single nation~quran
stonecrusher69 Posted July 4, 2005 Posted July 4, 2005 I have a friend who studies the Filipino M.A. in the Philippines from a grandmaster.I ask him what makes a master or Grandmaster there.he said its based on how long you have been actively training and teaching not so much your skill level, when you become a grandmaster its the other grandmasters that bestow to you the title not your self. http://www.youtube.com/user/sifumcilwrath"When the student is ready the master will appear"
Bruce WillPete7 Posted July 5, 2005 Author Posted July 5, 2005 Yea i agree with you guys that one would never refer to themselves as a master, usually its a title bestowed upon them by others point of view. Empty your mind, be formless, shapeless like water. When you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup; when you put water into a bottle, it becomes the bottle; when you put water into a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Now water can flow- or it can crash. Be water my friend. ~Bruce Lee
Sam Posted July 5, 2005 Posted July 5, 2005 exactly like i said.... i think very few people go around saying "IM A MASTER!!!"..... not really part of the title.
