Bon Posted March 8, 2002 Posted March 8, 2002 I think mental far outweighs physical. With mental capability, I think you can do anything physically, whether it be losing weight, getting into the splits, going another round when your body is saying stop, et cetera. _________________ It takes sacrifice to be the best. YODA Posted March 8, 2002 Posted March 8, 2002 Bon - It depends on what your goal is. If you goal is the superficial one common these days i.e. Just learning to kick ass, then you can do that with NO focus on the mental side of MA. I have seen very competent physical martial artists that don't have the IQ of the average brick. Muay Thai classes are full of them - and that's no slur on MT - It's a fantastic art and I have been studying & teach it for the last 10 years. The fact is that certain arts require students to be smater than others. Almost anyone can become competent at a very physically based system - and that's one of the strengths of these systems. On the other hand, some arts will never be that popular because they require a greater degree of insight & intelect. I have lost many students in my Filipino Martial Arts classes because, to be quite honest, they were not capable of studying & learning to the degree needed for that art. I realise that the above may ruffle a few feathers - this is sometimes a good thing YODA2nd Degree Black Belt : Doce Pares Eskrima https://www.docepares.co.ukQualified Instructor : JKD Concepts https://www.jkdc.co.ukQualified Fitness Instructor (Weights, CV, Circuit, Kinesiology)
Bon Posted March 8, 2002 Posted March 8, 2002 YODA, point taken.. But, to be a tough macho dude, you need the mentality for it first. I'm sure I could be a tough macho man if I wanted to, but I prefer to remain unknown if you know I mean. My goal when I started MA was to basically kick some ass, and the first few months I found to be quite a burden 'cause it was boring due to stretching and damn it was hard to do those 30 pushups =) If I didn't want to learn how to fight badly I wouldn't be obssesed with the MA today.. Fear and the desire to be able to fight kept me going... Not very well expressed or explained, but you see my point ? _________________ It takes sacrifice to be the best. CTpizzaboy Posted March 8, 2002 Posted March 8, 2002 I agreed. The desire to be able to fight well has always kept me interested in martial arts. May it be teakwondo, karate or BJJ, I just wanted to be able to win a fight and win. Anyone can throw a punch or kick, but it takes alot of mental strenght to win, Yoda. You can not have an IQ of an average, or even an above average brick and expect to win. "One can not run into a wall and expect it to fall down. That's what dynamite is for." Cory Reynolds Posted March 12, 2002 Posted March 12, 2002 Even if you're the fastest fighter in the world, it won't make a lick of difference if you don't have something going on in your head to make it effective. Even the best fighters physically will crumble if they don't have the mental skills to create a strategy to match whoever they are fighting. Wise man once said "he who has big mouth has much room for foot."
Ryukyu1 Posted March 13, 2002 Posted March 13, 2002 As you grow older that internal growth will become more important as you may see some of that speed and strenght leaving you and you will have to rely on your wits and experience.
