ramcalgary Posted March 5, 2002 Posted March 5, 2002 What is more important internal growth or physical development from the martial arts. No chicken answers like saying both Honor is the most important thing a man has once you lose it it is gone forever
three60roundhouse Posted March 6, 2002 Posted March 6, 2002 Honestly, I'm not trying to take a so-called "chicken answer" - but it really depends on what you want when you start an art. I really started becasue I needed something that could last all year long and would therfore be in the basketball offseason and also, my brothers were starting and I was just sitting there in ythe lobby doing nothing, so why not? So mainly, it was physical for me. Not to say that I haven't gained a lot of internal stuff, too. I have such a difrent outlook on life. I, like many of te eleven year olds who decide to take up tae kwon do, wanted to "beat people up" like on TV. I have matured so much due to the martial arts. Then again, the two arts (TKD and BJJ) that I study are very modern, so there is virtually no spirituality, we just learn basic lessons in common sense and morality. 1st dan Tae Kwon DoYellow Belt Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu16 Years OldGirls kick butt!
SaiFightsMS Posted March 6, 2002 Posted March 6, 2002 Why is saying both a chicken answer? For a serious student of the type who schedules their life around karate it has to include both physical and internal aspects. The desire and drive to keep training comes from the inside. And of course the physical side cannot be overlooked. For those who pratice a martial art for fun it may be just a physical act. IMHO the more wrapped up in martial arts a person becomes the more the drive from inside or the internal part comes into play. Wether we are always conscious of it or not.

kicker Posted March 7, 2002 Posted March 7, 2002 Well i think that physical development is more important at when you start Mas and training but after i believe that later on you might be changing into internal groth and then maybe even something you are learning both at sometimes you are developing physical development but then you also are having internal growth But i would say that physical development might be a bit more important since you wanted an answer when you do your best it`s going to show. "If you watch the pros, You will learn something new"
Cory Reynolds Posted March 7, 2002 Posted March 7, 2002 I feel that the physical development can't occur without the internal/mental happening first. You must learn to think, act, and control your own body which is a level of discipline that only your mind can enforce. Even very simple things like correctly stepping back into a proper fighting stance requires a ton of thought for most beginning students. For a lot of students, just getting up enough courage to step into the school/dojo for the first time takes a ton of effort. While both are important, I don't think that physical can occur before internal. Wise man once said "he who has big mouth has much room for foot."

CTpizzaboy Posted March 7, 2002 Posted March 7, 2002 Everything you do physically, effects you mentally, and every thought is displayed action. For example: You must think "Type the letter E", before you type "E". Otherwise, your neurons are not sending the right messages. Alright. Enough psychology. ramcalgary is asking, what do you seek to gain, internal growth such as self-enlightment or the ability to kick major as$. I say: TO KICK major as$. "I think, therefore I am." -Greek wise-guy Canh T.I often quote myself. It adds spice to my conversations.
Ahazmaksya Posted March 8, 2002 Posted March 8, 2002 They are both important but I see physical development as the more important quality...You can't excel in certain Martial Arts if your not good enough physically. Sure someone will say you can't excel if your not strong enough mentally, but I still think being physically developed is more important.
