My instructor went through some basic kicks that we could choose and pick from and ive seen this thai kick before and it definitely impresses me. The best description i can give is it looks like a perfect horizontal roundhouse kick but much more powerful b/c it seems to take everyones legs out when ive seen it done. If anyone can find a link or even describe it for me so i can just practice the motion i would much appreciate it ty.

it's a normal roundhouse. There are several variations and angles for the roundhouse kick:

kicking to the neck area, you can kick diagonally downward.

kicking to the floating ribs, you kick diagonally upward.

for a "suitcase kick", you lunge to the side and kick squarely on the front of the quadricep, just above the knee cap.

for the standard kick, you completely turn your hip over and kick inward - this is likely what you are talking about.

you can also cut inward after impact - like you are hitting them twice. This is hard to explain - I'm not going to type it out.

there is the switch kick, in which the front leg becomes the rear leg and kicks quickly.

the thai roundhouse kick is so powerful because it involves the whole body. the turning over of the hip is the main generation of the power; it doesn't chamber like kicks from other styles do.

Yep you got it right on the dot, so your basically hitting them with the outside of you leg? Not the calf not the shin but the outside of your legs.

How do you set up for this kick my instructor said to chamber it like a knee attack then roundhouse and turn your hip in. It seems easier if you just swing your leg.

Also is this kick more powerful/effective than a regular roundhouse that strikes with the shin?

you still hit with the shin - the hip turns over, not the leg. When you are first learning the kick, chambering it can be easier, as it's more natural for a lot of people. If you chamber the leg straight up - like a front kick - you HAVE to turn your hip over in order to get the kick at the right angle. As you get used to the kick, you can stop the chamber. Different people learn differently though - if you are more comfortable just swinging your leg, see what he thinks about it - because that's actually the way the kick should be thrown anyway.

im the same as in when i do this kick i find it easier to swing my leg. i usually do a katate round house kick as thats what ive been taught at kickboxxing so its different. but practice makes perfect

Thanks for the pointers guys, you were right elbows all i had to do was rotate my him (harder than it is) i really like the muy thai/ kickboxing kick ive tried it from a chamber and from a swing. No matter what its gonna take some practice but it feels awkward but a good awkward :) ty guys.
