to transport your sword somewhere, you need to put it in a swordbag and carry it as an identified weapon, and if you need to put it in a car your supposed to put it in the trunk

Same with guns. Must be in a case (unloaded) and in the trunk.

Some time this year I'm going to purchase a katana, but the problem is, are swords illegal like in Japan without a permit?

Regards to California Penal code;

Yes it is correct everything is illegal if used in a fight or just having it in public view.

As for learning the weapon, you may travel with it to and from your training class, as long as it is secured in a case.

Most practice swords are not battle ready meaning sharpened.

Competition blades are never sharpened..

I own a few blades, and yes once I was stopped, but the officer let me go because I could prove I was on my way to class.

90% of the penal code is there so if a sword was used in a crime they can prosecute for the use of it in that crime.

i doubt people will know the answer to this, but does anyone know if swords are legal in canada?

i dont see how they could stop you from having a sword because its a legitamate MA weapon but then again i have no idea of the laws in canada, id google it if i were you
