You know your history.Also something else,they used a lot of high kicks and wide movements because there was more space to do that.While the South was more cramped,therefore they made their styles more close quarters.

Yaw-Yan the filippino martial art is famous for its power ful kicking techniques.Check out their website https://www.yawyan.com.They have unusual kicking techniques which requires a lot of body flexibility .They have 40 basic kicks.You can get the list of their kicks from their website.

I teach traditional taekwondo and we absolutely teach high kicks and arial kicks to kids and even to the adults who want to learn them.

just curious,do you guys use arial kicks when sparring?

Absolutely. We practice sparring two different ways: Practical (self-defense oriented) and competition sparring. Of course we don't use the arial kicks for self-defense, but I have a number of talented students who can pull off (and land) beautiful jump-spin kicks and disguise them enough so that their opponent doesn't know it's coming.
