elliotspirrett
I made a huge mistake the other week of insulting our senior black belt jokingly, only he took it seriously and was unbelievable mad!I was just wondering what's the worst situation anyone has got themselves into at training.I think that causing myself to be threatened to be killed by a large, rugby playing, 2nd Dan Black belt, ex-British Karate Champion, with experience in Muay Thai and Kickboxing amongst others, has to be the biggest mistake of my life. Can anyone top that? Can't top it, but my mouth did a similar thing. After a midterm about a year ago, I was overheard by someone (That never admitted it) saying that I thought the 2 on 1 and 3 on 1 sparring was a little weak. Next midterm, Master Lee (6th degree, school owner), Mrs Lee (now 6th degree and 4 time world sparring champion in the ATA), and Mr. Nguyen (Our sparring instructor) walk out for my 3 on 1 section.Aodhan There are some people who live in a dream world, and there are some who face reality; and then there are those who turn one into the other.-Douglas Everett, American hockey player

UsagiYojimbo
Ever ask if a technqiue will really work in a fight, then get invited to have it demonstrated on you?lolYeah, I think everyone's done that. Most senseis are a bit psychic about this, I think. They'll put out a technique, and they can tell when people are thinking "Yeah, right, that'll work ". That's when you get the demo. Adonis
Yeah I have done that several years ago with one of my instructors. lol! I ran my mouth. I should have used a better choice of words. I think I was padding up and said "lets see what you got!" well I ment it as yeah I am ready lets spar. but now I see those choice of words doesn't sound to good if you think about them. I just spouted them out. I definetly payed for it he took it to me in sparring. Not to bad though he had a good heart he just gave me a couple good shots and swept me a few times. He didn't try to KO me or any thing like that. talked to me after wards about chalanging him and I learned I should choose my words more carefully. My cocky attitude at that time didn't help me either. So re-inforced his idea that I was chalanging him. Oh well, I chock it up to lessons being learned. Skeptic 2004
Ever ask if a technqiue will really work in a fight, then get invited to have it demonstrated on you? This is quite possibly the best way to learn how to apply a technique and understand the principles behind why it works. I actually find being demonstrated on stimulating in terms of learning and training. Call me sado-masochistic, but one thing I've always been envious of is not being the designated uke - when my best friend and I trained together, he was always the one who got demonstrated on. Now with my current instructor, he uses (understandably so) one of his most senior students to demonstrate everything on.Back a little more on topic, I think one of my more amusing mistakes was when I first started training, I sparred one of my good friends from high school pretty hard - it was my third match, ever. He was a 1st kyu and had been training for roughly 10 years (he couldn't test for black belt until he turned 18 ); I was a white belt and scared to death of him on the mat. He started out taking it easy on me, but I was so busy being afraid of him that I fought like my life depended on it...and I was actually mopping the floor with him briefly (key word: BRIEFLY). He got irritated and upped the ante until he was going at it full force. Thinking about it now, my head still stings from the finishing spinning hook kick that he nearly knocked me out with. Sam
I think its interesting ot see someone who doesnt know whats coming being demonstrated on - becuase alot of the tiem the uke will move with a technique.on topic - he threatened to kill you?! lolIve never done anything that can top that, have been shown how effective some moves are that i had doubts about, but thats bout it. I wholeheartedly agree with this statement.Worst mistake? Grappling with the opponent behind me, arms around my waist, trying to pull me down to the ground - my body says spin left and my knee forgot to spin with it. ouch.BullsEye Serious Deals, No Bull!https://www.bullseyefitness.com=========================
tufrthanu
Well probably my most offensive mistake was when I was a 1st dan...which I still am...hmmmm...well I'll think abotu that later. But anyway, I was doing pad kicks with a 3rd dan...highest ranked student at my old school except for the owner. Very nice guy...after we get done doing the kicks he says I want to try something. So I hold the pad and he tries to do some wierd perhaps not real well thought out kick. Basically a jumping forward facing round kick. Well he managed to hit the pad that the other student was holding...but missed mine and clocked my hand full force. I snapped and started yelling at him. He was very calm perhaps from the shock of being yelled at. I was sorry afterwards that I had done it and he complimented me on my performance in class, so I figured it worked out ok.
