How close is Gilbert, AZ to Phoenix?

There's a nice looking Combat Hapkido school in Gilbert, AZ.

One thing to consider: ICHF instructors are given some latitude about when to introduce some parts of the ground fighting curriculum. My school starts us off with groundfighting right away. Make sure to talk to the instructor at this Gilbert dojang to see when they start ground fighting.

The standing throws, takedowns, and submissions are more standardized, I think. Same for ground submissions that proceed directly from a throw or takedown.

Carlson Gracie (JR, I think) directs the ICHF ground grappling program, and Mark Gridley directs ground survival.

Like I said, check out the ICHF webisite. ichf.com

If it works, use it!

If not, throw it out!

Actually, Gilbert is just a couple miles down the road (I'm actually in Mesa, a suburb of Phx, but it's easier to say Phx than have people say "Mesa?!? Where's that?").

I'll check it out, thanks!

Aodhan I dont know if the guy is still there but a student of Robert Trias used to teach karate and judo there in Mesa. As a student of a school that tought hapkido techniques full speed I can tell you its a good way to get messed up quick. It's one thing to roll on the ground and put a lock on someone...it's entirely different when you try and throw them using that same lock. That's why I eventually looked for another school. Personally I would suggest you look for a non sporting school...JJJ, HKD, AKD...you might even be able to find some other styles down there like KSW or HRD that do that type of stuff. I don't know alot about chinese grappling arts but I'm sure theres some good versions of those out there too.

OK lol I just realized I didn't give you the guys name...its Milt Calander. In Mesa. Also theres a guy in scottsdale named Chris Hoshiyama who might be able to suggest something. Hes at the southwest center for the martial arts.

In my expierience, Combat Hapkido is very safe with proper instruction.

If it works, use it!

If not, throw it out!

Use-

I got an email back from the Master of the school, and I will either be going over to check out classes tonight or next Tuesday. I'll let you know how it goes!

He seemed to feel that I should pick up a lot of things quickly because of my background, and that I would enjoy the variation. Seemed like a really nice guy, I'll talk to him more when I go in.

yeah i know a couple of people who do Combat Hapkido and theyve never complained about excess injuries.

Jujitsu- all the way- better for self defense

Aikido- if you want it for the art.

Judo- if you just want to grab someone and throw him hard on the floor.

Well a bit of a simplistic explanation. but i guess accurate in some degrees.

I'd agree taht for SD i'd personally go for JuJitsu
