swordtail Posted June 21, 2005 Posted June 21, 2005 I have been studying wado-ryu for 3 years now and am greatly enjoying it.However i have a query - i recently took part in a 2 day training course with my club, which also had a tournament on the second day. At the end of the 2 days i recieved a certificate for taking part on the course. At the top of the cert. it had in big letters EWSKA or English 'Wado-Ryu Sport Karate Association' Sport Karate?? What is the difference and does this mean i have not been learning proper wado-ryu?? Style: Wado-Ryu Current Grade: 7th Kyu
JimmyNewton Posted June 21, 2005 Posted June 21, 2005 i think it varies from teacher to teacher. not real sure though the difference "The wise and successsful will always be met with violent opposition by mediocre minds."
cheeks Posted June 22, 2005 Posted June 22, 2005 sport karate - focuses on competion techniques, semi contact sparringtraditional wado ryu - focuses on katas, correct technique, and lots of rituals and philosophy (although only at higher levels...)it depends on what you do most often; kata or competions, as to which your club focuses on. and dont worry you can do both, we are a traditional club yet we are part of Sport England If you have just read the above message and agree with it then you may worship me as the best thing since sliced bread. Of course if you don't agree then hey, i'm a crazed lunatic and you should ignore my insane ramblings.
