three60roundhouse Posted March 4, 2002 Posted March 4, 2002 I'm really new to grappling, started BJJ about a month ago,but what do you do when you have someone in a really good, let's say, choke, and they are turning purple and refuse to tap? I mean he was only 13 (I'm 14) and he wouldn't tap. I don't want to make him pass out! 1st dan Tae Kwon DoYellow Belt Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu16 Years OldGirls kick butt!
Hapkidodude Posted March 4, 2002 Posted March 4, 2002 If he doesnt tap, how can you know if your technique is working. Is there an instructor watching to supervise. I have always been told to make them tap or let the instructor break the action. BrettThe Hand is quicker than the eye!
Joecooke007 Posted March 4, 2002 Posted March 4, 2002 It's his problem if he doesn't tap. You can use that as an excuse. Maybe your technique worked so well that it killed off brain cells immediately. Just a thought. Boards don't hit back. -Bruce Lee
YODA Posted March 4, 2002 Posted March 4, 2002 This is an easy one - choke him out! This is no big deal - it's not like he's not tapping from an armbar so you break his arm - if he won't tap from a choke then put him to sleep. ramcalgary Posted March 4, 2002 Posted March 4, 2002 keep applying the hold he will either tap or pass out. If he passes out ,next time he will tap. Honor is the most important thing a man has once you lose it it is gone forever
Bon Posted March 5, 2002 Posted March 5, 2002 hahaha, sounds like the macho dude that won't get tapped out by a girl.. CHOKE HIM OUT! That will teach him to tap.. The guy needs to stop being macho and realise he's actually learning something when he taps out. It takes sacrifice to be the best. There are always two choices, two paths to take. One is easy. And its only reward is that it's easy.
Angus Posted March 5, 2002 Posted March 5, 2002 We were doing grappling the other night and i had to go with this 15 y/o dude who is like 30kg lighter than me... I'd done BJJ before and he hadn't done anything but using his strength and trying to do locks and stuff... I didn't wanna hurt the dude but he wouldn't submit.... SO the first one ended with me on his back, and him on top. I planted my forearm in the nice soft part of his nick, basically on his adams apple - he couldn't move or do anything. I said "i'm gonna apply more pressure now" and choked as hard as i could and he taped straight away... I could have broken so many of his bones in the second one but didn't want to hurt the kid so we rolled for 10 minutes until i got the mount on him and just made him hold his breath for a while unti the instructor made us stop... He wouldn't tap though, but i know that i could have easily had him out in five seconds, but i knew he wouldn't tap. Tough little bugger though, Angus Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear, not absence of fear.
Prodigy-Child Posted March 9, 2002 Posted March 9, 2002 if they dont wanna tap that is their problem......when they end up with a broken arm cuz they wouldnt tap out from a arm bar or whatever you slapped on that is their problem thats all!!!!! You can boo me if you want, You know I'm right!-Chris Rock
YODA Posted March 10, 2002 Posted March 10, 2002 I disagree PC. Choking someone out for not tapping from a choke is one thing - breaking someone's arm is a different matter and leaves all manner of holes for missuse by uncaring and downright evil people. "Oh, did you tap? I didn't hear you - sorry I broke your arm" - I can just hear it now. If one of my students broke another's arm because he wouldn't tap he'd be out the door pronto - and would not be welcome back. In fact, unless it wan an ignorant beginner who got injured they'd both be gone! bjjbarbie Posted April 8, 2002 Posted April 8, 2002 sorry guys i disagree with what most of u have to say the reason being the kid is only 13!!! in a tournament with safe, proper conditions/refs yeah sure send him into a deep sleep...but at tournament u see all these kids burst into tears coz they dont want to tap!!! talk about alot of snapped elbows!! if it is in training on the other hand....who cares the guy knows uve nailed him!!!! then again i guess it really isnt ur prob!! (had a slight change of mind!! hehe) ..u gotta say though u hate that one in a million chance that the kid had a heartc ondition and u killed the little tacker!!! boo!
