Transitioning between Degrees of Black Belt

Recommended Posts

As with any belt promotion, colored or black, the "transition" itself takes place each and every day that we train. There is no miraculous change that occurs on testing day.....its like the saying goes.....its not the destination that counts, but the journey.

It would be really funny though if it was like that - you didnt gain any skill till you passed your next grading, like ingames - levelling up! hehe

In my dojo, after 2nd Dan you must train like your test for the next rank can be any day. The Master likes to spring the test on the next ranks. Could be 2 years in time from 2nd to 3rd. Could be 5. We don't know but are always prepared (and I like it that way as it keeps the mind very sharp!)

yeha - even higher grades, you just see people going through the motions, then picking up their training just for grading time.... realy not good to see.

I had someone tossed off their black belt test 2 weeks ago for that reason. I could tell the material was crammed in the past couple of weeks and not the "confidence" level needed to be a black belt. I take promoting my students very seriously, and if they don't feel the same way, they can stay at their rank a little longer. (Yes, even the advance belts)

well tahts the way to do it - the more advanced the more dedicated they should be. no use having different rules and standards for different grades. :D

I respectfully disagree. In our organization, the tests get considerably more difficult and the standards much higher as your rank increases. We have different rules for colored belt, black belt, and high rank black belt. For example, colored belts will get three chances to do their pattern (kata) correctly, black belts get two. Colored belts may still pass if a chamber or preparation for a technique is a little off, but a black belt will not.
