tkd... and XMA

XMA is not a style. XMA is a way of presentation. You can take it and apply it to ANY art. All it is, is a codification of presentation techniques that have been found to garner attention at national competitions over the last decade or so.

XMA is eXtreme Martial Arts. Basically, there were some practictioners that were having success on the open circuit doing poomse (kata) with a lot of yells, flips, 540 kicks, 720 kicks, side twist aerial kicks, flips, things of that nature. For weapons, it was trickier handling, release moves, things of that nature.

Mike Chat (Actual last name is something like Chatarantabut), took all these techniques and made a series of DVD's and ways to teach them, and packaged it with sparkly uniforms and weapons, and called it XMA, and that has become the general term for the flashy, showy aerial stuff.

TKD, in my experience, does more fancy, often gymnastic or exotic, aerial kicks before 7 AM than my whole Capoeira class ever did in an entire year. Most TKD people I have talked to say they do them for training purposes, but we never did them at all. Mind you, there are a lot of styles of Capoeira, and your mileage may vary quite a bit.
