I would feel safe walking through the ghetto at night. when attacked people can be fazed by thinking "I can't belive that this is happening" you need to be thinking "this was probably gonna happen someday and today I'm ready!"

I hope in your sentence you meant to say "wouldn't feel safe walking in the ghetto". Police don't feel safe in ghettos at night. Neither should you.

It's happy hour somewhere in the world.

I am still a believer that people tend to make themselves vitims. They don't pay attention to the warning signs and get it. There are exceptions with random acts of violence that come with no warning...ie. the guy who walks into McDonalds and just shoots up the place for no reason.

You have to trust your instincts. You have to control all the elements you can. Bad things usually happen when people take risks. When I say risks it doesn't have to be something like walking through the ghetto.

It can be a simple as:

1) drinking alcohol - from slight to excessive

2) being in a place that serves alcohol

3) taking a shortcut you've never taken before

4) walking late at night

5) flashing cash when your on the town

6) looking out of place

7) standing out in the crowd

I could go on forever. We call it risk management, there are acceptable to unacceptable risks we all take in our lives. The better you control risk the less likely you will become a victim yourself.

As for someone jumping you from behind...there are plenty of things you can do if you don't panic.

Iron Arahat nailed it, 95% of street saftey and fighting is based upon risk management. I'd like to add to his list "vibe" that feeling you get in certain places/circumstances. if you're entereing a bar/club or area and get a bad vibe usually something bad will happen it's easy to just go somewhere else if possible that has a better vibe. also if you're outnumbered try your best to leave i have never seen a one on one street fight (and i've seen plenty) it's always a small group or large group usually with one of them near you, that you would never suspect.

Also, police don't enter ghettos unless called by a serious complaint.

take full advantage of your surroundings

I feel quite safe where i'm living now but recently, 2 of my mates got mugged at about 5 minutes walk from my place, right next to a supermarket... :kaioken:

I've always tried to "watch out" wherever i go but since those events, i try even harder.

Some of my friends say i'm paranoid, always looking around as if i was gonna get attacked from behind or something.

I'm just aware of my surroundings. That's probably the only best thing you can do to avoid a fight or at least see it coming.

I feel safer now in the area I just moved to but in my old area it was like the wild west. If you did walk arpund trying to look assertive it would most definetly be taken up as a challenge..the challeneg being how many bones in your body they could break.

I often wonder is is safe to go out. I live in a not so good area. Around here it is not a good idea at all to go our after dark. I don;t know how many dope deals I have seen going down outside.

When it is a really great day outside I will really want to go outside. But then at the same time the trouble makers are thinking the same thing. You have to be constantly aware of your surroundings here. I mean around here if someone is carrying a base ball bat it is not to play ball with.

It's not the place, it's the people at the place. I've been gang bashed in my very own street while drunk when I've lived here all my life and my street is very quiet.

I understand too well! I was very fortunate they couldn't fight and I was able to run away from them. It all comes down to being aware of your surroundings and being prepared no matter where you are. I can't believe how I can walk behind some people and they don't even notice me walking behind them!

It takes sacrifice to be the best.

There are always two choices, two paths to take. One is easy. And its only reward is that it's easy.
