AnonymousOne Posted March 4, 2002 Author Posted March 4, 2002 "If you fail to meet your full potential how would that make you feel, would it worry you and if so why would it worry you? " I don't think I'll feel anything, as I will die before failing to meet that potential.. full potential is unattainable, it's like trying to be perfect. I never meant perfection, I meant what 'you' personally aspire to. Perhaps 5th Dan rank, running 10 miles aday, bench pressing 250lbs, winning a certain contest, mastering a certain form, attaining teachers rank etc etc. There are as many desires as there are people. btw the my questions were designed for people to ask themselves 7th Dan ChidokaiA true combat warrior has to be hard as nails in mind, body and soul. Warriors are action takers and not action fakers. If you are cruising, make time for losing
SaiFightsMS Posted March 4, 2002 Posted March 4, 2002 Before karate I was in a period where goals had no meaning at all. I just existed. With karate came structure to my life. I planned my life around my training. Our school runs on a quarter system. At the beginning of every quarter I would find myself sitting down and making a list of goals for that quarter. After 20+ years of ms planning physical accomplishments was a very foriegn concept at first. At the end of the quarter I would sit down and evaluate how well I did or didnot do in accomplishing my goals. A big factor in wether or not I met them was always my health. I have to admit I have gotten lax in my goals department. And it is time to get serious again. This thread was kind of like a kick in the seat of the pants for me. Time to get going again.
shotochem Posted March 4, 2002 Posted March 4, 2002 As long as its still fun and challenging I just keep raising the bar on what my goals are. I found that I could do alot more than I thought and I want to see how far I can go. Though sometimes I dont know whether Im coming or going or where. Ill let everyone know if I ever do..... Pain is only temporary, the memory of that pain lasts a lifetime.
KickChick Posted March 4, 2002 Posted March 4, 2002 At my age, I have had to learn to set realistic goals for myself. I will never (no matter how hard I train) be able to be as quick, or jump as high as many of the younger students. But I do alright for myself for what I can do! I have had to sit down and have many a talk with myself concerning this exact thing. I tend to expect too much and now have learned to be proud of what I have accomplished...black belt at 40! ...Thanks to a supportive husband and 3 children (I mean how many women could or even have the desire to accomplish what I have!!! I continue to set those realistic goals ... I will bring home 1st place at tournament at the end of the month! Realistic?
SaiFightsMS Posted March 5, 2002 Posted March 5, 2002 Yes Kickchick we are not young or even physically gifted. I may never do the jump kick at the back of Kanku Dai like everyone else; but I can do an effective center kick followed by the head high kick as a worthy substitute. Of course that doesn't mean I will stop trying to relearn how to jump.
