If I'm thinking of what you're thinking of, then they're used for building strength (they're heavy, made of iron or something like it).
i think we have the same thing in mind.I've seen them a lot in anything that is chinise martial arts.A good example is if u saw kung fu hustle one of the 3 masters had it when he was fighting

the iron rings are used for conditioning and for endurance training.

eg stand in a low horse stance, hold your arms out to each side, put a ring on each arm and see how long you can hold it....

If you have just read the above message and agree with it then you may worship me as the best thing since sliced bread.

Of course if you don't agree then hey, i'm a crazed lunatic and you should ignore my insane ramblings.

But can they not be used to repel blades? If they are iron rings it seems they can be used as forearm sheilds but thats just me and that was just a movie.

Empty your mind, be formless, shapeless like water. When you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup; when you put water into a bottle, it becomes the bottle; when you put water into a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Now water can flow- or it can crash. Be water my friend. ~Bruce Lee

We use the brass rings quite a bit in my school. I've only known them to be used for training. While any object can be used a weapon. I think there are more effective gaurds/weapons to use. Fighting with brass rings is just good 'movie kung fu'. The actor in KF Hustle is a skilled Hung-Ga Sifu.
