Fairfax_Uechi Posted February 19, 2006 Posted February 19, 2006 Lol spent 11 years tweaking geki sai dai knee so far:) Surely you mean sanchin and tensho are everything. How can you have one without the other, thats the same as having hard without soft? Or is that GoJu specific? Have always been taught tensho is the soft to sanchins hard?DiscussJonUm, I'm not sure. I'm not familar with tensho. But you have to remember that Uechi and Gojo do Sanchin differently. From my quick (2 minute research on tensho), I can say that we work breathing, and hardness and softness into all of our kata. Hence my work to perfect Sanchin. It's ironic, but as a beginner, I would be very tense and try to ge the moves right with what I thought was a lot of power. As I progressed, I actually learned to soften the arms or legs that I was moving, but actually tighten the rest of my body even more than I could as a beginner. But the more I train, the more I go back to basics to improve other techniques. FYI, at some point, I'm going to hook up with some of my Gojo friends and learn some of their techniques as I think it's always good to know other things outside of your own art.
jh5638 Posted February 19, 2006 Posted February 19, 2006 I'm still learning Sanchin Ichi. I have the movements basically memorized, but the breathing is still a problem for me. It is a good one though, a great way to warm up and get the blood pumping!Ah i love it, weird really how much i love them all. Have recently moved to a new club where the emphasis is much different, still practice 2 hours a day though and have yet to get bored! When you sort the breathing out a lot will fall into place. Also you'll realise it is a great recovery kata and if done well its the best and cheapest high you can get (quoting my sensei)Enjoy! Take life and live it

Basically starting those other styles has proved to be the biggest and best challenge so far! Take life and live it
innocui Posted February 23, 2006 Posted February 23, 2006 I don't study hein needan at all. My style at the moment is Go-Kan Ryu. Currently, my Tournament kata is Sei-un-chin, which is 2nd kyu (black tip), for 1st kyu (black tip??? why-please explain) is empi. GKRs Shodan-Ho (provisional black belt) katas are Sepai and San-Seru
sliknik Posted May 2, 2006 Posted May 2, 2006 hi yai am learning pinan nidan how long did it took you to learn it https://www.kempojitsu.co.ukhttps://www.hyogendo.com
lordtariel Posted May 2, 2006 Posted May 2, 2006 It didn't take long to get the movements of Pinan Nidan down, it only took me about a week, but doing it correctly is another matter entirely. I've been doing it for about 2 months now and still working on some of the different bits of posture and execution. Right now I'm learning Pinan Sandan. There's no place like 127.0.0.1
Sohan Posted May 2, 2006 Posted May 2, 2006 I have gone back to some of my basics to work on some stances and timing. But my favorites right now to work on are the Passai forms. I never do them to my satisfaction.Respectfully,Sohan "If I cannot become one of extraordinary accomplishment, I will not walk the earth." Zen Master Nakahara Nantenbo"A man who has attained mastery of an art reveals it in his every action." Samuarai maxim"Knowing others is wisdom; knowing yourself is Enlightenment." Lao-Tzu
ps1 Posted May 2, 2006 Posted May 2, 2006 It's funny...after nearly 21 years...I still don't do any of them to my own satisfaction. I think I'm gonna go do Tekki Shodan now. "It is impossible to make anything foolproof because fools are so ingenius."
bluejay Posted May 4, 2006 Posted May 4, 2006 Right now, I'm working on Saifa for my next test. I've done Tensho and Sanchin before; however, I don't have them memorized yet. I really like the Gekisai kata because they are my best kata that I can preform. Lizzie
Yasutsune Makoto Posted May 4, 2006 Posted May 4, 2006 Currently I am working on Sochin. I think it's one of the most powerful katas out there.Does anyone else get that feeling as they practice Sochin? Gi, Yu, Rei, Jin, Makoto, Melyo, Chugo
