color belts vary from dojo to dojo, even within a single style.

Heian Nidan is the kata you perform for your orange belt test in my dojo.

You'll also find that after a certain level, you get to choose which kata you want to learn or concentrate on (for example, I think ISKF has a list of katas and you need to choose one from group 1 and one from group 2 to test for Shodan (first degree black belt), etc...)

what belt would red replace karate kid? my belt system in my shotokan is white yellow orange green blue purple brown black. i guess it would depend on which kyu you are right? (ps. in my dojo we learn all heian katas in blue belt WHEEEE!!!!... i've learned the first two, but my sensei is on vacation. i started learning hangetsu, kanku sho bassai katas, wankan, and i just recently p0wn3d gankaku. since summer started i've been practicing 8-10 hours a day. yay!) edit: also i learned tekki shodan and nidan.:

Interesting - I've never seen red placed in such a junior position before. More often it precedes brown, which was the case in my old ISKF Shotokan dojo, as well as in my current JKR Shindo Jinen-Ryu dojo. (My Shito-Ryu dojo was old school: Just white, yellow, green, brown, and black, with tests once a year...) :)

I am doing Heian Nidan.

For my recent test, 8th Kyu, I had to do both Heian Sho-dan and Heian Nidan but for my next rank, I have to do Heian Nidan again but more refined.

The belts in our club go white, orange, yellow, blue, green, low purple, high purple, 3 brown belts then black.

I am a shodan, and recently finished Kanku.

I think that means "look to the sky" in japanese, referring to the opening of the kata.
