Yeah, he has a point, but the topic really asks about the requirement of weapons in order to excel in martial arts. I guess if a person doesn't feel they are... that's ok. But they better hope they don't get into a fight with somebody who's trained with knives, sticks, whatever.

It's happy hour somewhere in the world.

Training for unarmed defense against a weapon is important. Training to use a weapon is fine, but since most martial arts weapons are illegal or impractical to carry, I'd rather train to use a gun. It's legal in many states (including my own) and probably more effective.

I don't teach children to use weapons.

Weapons training, if nothing else, is fun. Knowing how to use a lot of the weapons can transfer the ability to other aspects of your fighting, as well.

I train knives specifically because smaller ones ARE legal in case I ever REALLY need it. Besides, I'd rather not shoot anyone.

I agree, weapons training can be fun. I also agree that knife training is one of the more practical weapons to train with. Although I would not want to either shoot or stab someone, the gun would act as a greater deterrent to avoid either myself or the attacker being injured.

I do not carry a gun. I train predominately in unarmed martial arts.

Weapons round out a Martial Artist, but don't count on them or on your fighting style/technique alone. Try to incorporate all angles and aspects of your art. This will make you well rounded in your art.

yeah i train with weapons regulalrly, in addition to fighting and kata. I am knowledgeable with the Bo, Sai, Nunchaku, Tonfa, and Kama. I feel like they carry over as far as being able to pick up any object and applying the principles learned.

I just was wondering how prevalent Kobodu is throughout the martial arts/ karate community. I appreciate the feedback.

Not training in them currenlty - i would definitely agree it would be helpful - just becuase it gives you more options of what to do and use....but not necessary.
