Hart Posted June 3, 2005 Posted June 3, 2005 A lot of the guys at my school think Karate is a joke, and they make fun of anyone who practices it. Most of them are jerks, but I think their attitude comes from watching those UFC specials on PayPerView. They say Karate doesn't work, but I for one think different. It's not so much the style I think--it's what you do with. It'd sure be good to see a Karate fighter win the UFC. Think it'll happen?
ravenzoom Posted June 3, 2005 Posted June 3, 2005 I doubt it because karate is not a complete martial art. Can be very effective like many other martial arts that do not do well in the ring, but lacks in ground work. I understand what you mean when you say people bash karate. MMA has been good for some martial arts, but it has been a disaster for many others including karate, kung fu, tae kwon do, etc. People in the streets might believe these styles are ineffective because of MMA events but many of those might be surprised if they get into a fight with one of them.
Sauzin Posted June 3, 2005 Posted June 3, 2005 I've been noticing this too. The only two things that stand between an effective art and one that isn't are a tradition to draw knowledge from and the mind to practice it.
seersin Posted June 3, 2005 Posted June 3, 2005 Tha thing that right now bothers me most is tha fact tha right now tha UFC and Pride are tha measuring stick for what MA's would work in a real life situation.I don't understand how it came to this.In real life I'd pick a stand-up traditional art over ground submissions everyday, for one simple reason too.In real life situation tha ground is not tha safest place to be.I'd much rather land a real hard groin kick opposed to wrestle around with someone on tha ground.I'm not biased here at all either I really enjoy my Judo Dojo, but If I can end a situation standing I;d take that anyday.I think a lot of MMA guys don't look at it that way.A lot of cats think that of it won't work in the ring it won't work in real life. TopGun Posted June 3, 2005 Posted June 3, 2005 What happens when someone takes a ground fighting MA because they saw it on UFC and they get in a situation where there are 2 attackers? So they suceed in getting one attacker to the ground but there are no rules saying that the other one is going to fight fair so now that person is tied up on the ground..... the other attacker is free to kick and punch as the please, I mean they could even take their time and choose their targets. In a real life situation I would prefer to be upright fighting for my life then on the ground. That is just a personal preference. "It's not whos right, but whos left!"
AngelaG Posted June 3, 2005 Posted June 3, 2005 The problem with traditional karate for self-defence is that a lot of the moves trained are not, and never will be, legal in competitions. Take shuto uke when used as a neck strike or a neck wrench. These techniques will not translate to a competition environment. Sabumnim Posted June 4, 2005 Posted June 4, 2005 I agree with AnonymousOne.People have many preconcieved ideas of martial arts, let them. They will be in for a surprise. "There are no limitations only plateux, and once you reach them you must not stay there."--Bruce Lee

That is just a personal preference.Whether its one or two attackers, the first thing you should try to do if attacked it get away. This is true especially if its more than one attacker. In any situation you should choose the option of flight over fight. If you must fight, fight until the opportunity presents itself to get away.
