marie curie Posted January 22, 2006 Posted January 22, 2006 I started my first martial art at 11, and did it until i was 14 or 15. Then, like many people are saying, I was distracted by other sports, organizations, and my boyfriend. I just started back into different styles when I was 19, and I'm sooooo glad that I had that base to work off of. I'd say I picked things up faster when I was younger, but because of that experience, I, now, pick things up faster than other people in my new styles. So, really, I think you are at a great time to start, and even if you don't train as often as you may later in life, as you are at a really busy time, it's a great idea to get in as much as you reasonabley can. Mastering it is the hard part. I see its one of your styles, good luck with that one- for me, its all the martial arts you need to defend urself. <> Be humble, train hard, fight dirty
marie curie Posted January 23, 2006 Posted January 23, 2006 Yeh, Kajukenbo is an awesome defense system, but uless you are on the west coast or Ohio, I'm pretty sure it's hard to find schools. Semper Jab Posted January 23, 2006 Posted January 23, 2006 When I was 16 I thought I was too old to start, haha. Cuz I was motivated by movies and Jet Li and Jackie Chan obviously started way younger. But what actually carried them, and is carrying me now, is their awesome work ethic. But I didn't realize this until now that I'm 18 and wasted two years playing video games and mouthing off on forums. "It's just a job. Grass grows, birds fly, waves pound the sand. abacus Posted February 2, 2006 Posted February 2, 2006 i started when i was 11, and i progressed quikly. a year later and i was a purple belt. teen years are a good time to start, because your mind is expanding to let in more info.
stolen_bones Posted February 5, 2006 Posted February 5, 2006 I was 18 when I started training in Karate and I wish that I had started at the age of the kids in my class (around 8-10).You can also train, whilst still enjoying a normal lifestyle, like another post said, girlfriends, parties, family, etc. Just make martial arts a part of your life. Evade, Block, CounterIf it works, use it!
mtheiss Posted March 15, 2006 Posted March 15, 2006 I do not think a given age is important as far as when is the good time to start any martial art (or hobby for that matter). However, no one asked this person yet if he wants to be competitive or not. I think that is an important question to determine what his intentions are at this stage. Chaz Posted March 16, 2006 Posted March 16, 2006 That's when i started actually... Good age, definatly not too young. I've always wished I would have started earlier... "One of the lessons of history is that nothing is often a good thing to do and always a clever thing to say." - Will Durant
