You start out with a white belt. Work real hard to get it black. Once it's black, you work even harder to get it white again.

And I agree with you about exploring other arts at this level. My theory is that after Black Belt the styles blend into one. It is only the journey from the bottom of the mountain that is different-each path unique.

Yes, a blackbelt is just a good student. Shodan means first rank,so you could say that before that you had no rank. :karate:

A blackbelt is not the beginning,it's a piece of cloth,that's all.

umm, i thought that real training began when you were white belt, and that black belt represents an advanced student, ie someone who is good technically but has more to learn..

A small interjection here....in most systems a black belt symbolizes that you are now worthy to be a student. The kyu's are just tryouts!
