parkerlineage Posted May 26, 2005 Posted May 26, 2005 Okay, really, this isn't a vs anything, but I figured I'd get more people to look at it if I put that.Ha.Okay, well, in a way, it is. I've been dying to know this forever: In AK, we have 180+ written techniques, sequences of strikes, with names that we drill. For example:Five Swords (For a right hook punch to the head)1.) Step forward with right foot and right inward block, left outward parry.2.) Right outward chop to throat.3.) Turn to forward bow, palm with left while chamber right.4.) Turn back to neutral bow, right swordhand (changed to a punch, most places), while cover high with left.5.) Adjust left foot to bottom right 45 while outward parry across neck to pull down and expose back of neck, circle right hand and right downward chop.Do any other styles have things like this? Or just your kata?Peace;Parkerlineage American Kenpo Karate- First Degree Black Belt"He who hesitates, meditates in a horizontal position."Ed Parker
AnonymousOne Posted May 26, 2005 Posted May 26, 2005 Our school has a number of exercises which involves blocks, kicks, punches and variable direction turns that are not Kata but just exercises. 7th Dan ChidokaiA true combat warrior has to be hard as nails in mind, body and soul. Mr. Mike Posted May 26, 2005 Posted May 26, 2005 happy to say that we only have 55 to remember . But all of the original concepts are contained in those 55, so we don't need 180+ or the original 300+ techniques.Parker said he would rather have one technique that works for him instead of 10 that work against. what he was getting at was that the fewest possible movements to get the job done is best...economy of motion.yeah, we have those too, but we aren't that different. A scholar, teacher, author, master practitioner, innovator, actor, student, father, promoter, and international leader. Mr. Parker revolutionized martial arts concepts and skills application to fit our modern needs. A countless number of movie stars, famous martial artists, and international celebrities have all benefited from their association with this famous 'Father of American Karate'. His intensity of philosophy, deliverance of knowledge, sincere humility, and true appreciation of his students saw him fulfill a very demanding schedule the world over. Mr. Parker was one of many firsts, a 'doer', a man of missionary conviction. He will never be forgotten for he lives in the hearts and minds of the thousands he touched throughout his productive life. Ed Parker's Kenpo Is UniqueKENPO is pure intelligence of thought and motion. Mr. Parker added concepts, theories, principles and innovations, not yet employed by other systems. This is what makes his KENPO system unique, practical, logical, realistic, and applicable. It has often been referred to as the "University of Martial Arts". It employs linear as well as circular moves, utilizing intermittent power when and where needed, interspersed with minor and major moves that flow with continuity. It is flexible in thought and action allowing one to blend with confrontations one mayencounter. Mr. Parker has written over 15 authoritative books about Kenpo and his experiences related to establishing this unique karate system. After years of experimenting, discovering, teaching, and sharing, Mr. Parker has unified his Kenpo knowledge in each of the books he authored this information taken from http://www.completemartialarts.com/whoswho/halloffame/edparker.htm When a man's fortunate time comes, he meets a good friend; When a man has lost his luck, he meets a beautiful woman.-anonymous
busling Posted May 27, 2005 Posted May 27, 2005 In our school we have a range of "attack sequences". Basically they are about 2 to 5 moves that are learnt in sequence. Also we have over 14 "sets" on the wooden dummy and three "forms/kata". Train Hard --- http://www.combatcentres.com/
