Martial Arts on Pop Culture

Recommended Posts

People today dont fight often, they just act tough. MTV generation my @$$... I can't stand MTV, I don't even have it anymore. Kids today are punks that don't know how to fight. They are just skinny mixed up kids.

TV Shows like Martial Law, and Walker Texas Ranger just make me laugh. They are such horrible depictions, not to mention propaganda. I seen an episode of Walker Texas ranger where they went into texas back country and there was a Nazi group in a huge warehouse watching a big muscle bound black guy fight a skin head tatoo guy.... come on people that is ridiculous.

Do unto others, as they done to you.

What's your point there?

Not that I condone the subject matter, but I lived in Texas for 20 yrs, and that scenario is unfortunately not outside the realm of possibility. On the other hand, I didn't see the show either. :dodgy:

I also have to agree with ZR440. Letting kids practically raise themselves because parents are never home, not forcing "realistic" curfews, and constantly giving in to the "but all my friends get to do whatever they want" argument isn't helping matters.

Being a martial artist should not cause you to look down upon other people simply because they live their lives different than you. Simply because you choose to live your life with more discipline does not make you better.

As far as putting down the Walker program. Sure they took liberties and over exaggerated some things throughout the course of many of the episodes. TV does that. What is wrong with a program that shows the good guys winning and showing that crime does not pay. In a world where the rudeset and the crudest usually get rewarded( eg WWF )it is refreshing to see a program that deals with honor and respect and justice as great things.

PS dont you think wearing white pajamas and kicking and punching into the air looks a little strange? It is all in how you look at things! Remember every group of parents think that their kids are strange. My parents thought early U2 and Simple Minds were weird and now I listen to some of my 15 year olds music and think what the he.. is he listening to.

Instaed of looking down at people who are diff try to influence them by your actions

but we do have many of the teenieboppers and goths as well!

What's wrong with being a goth? Gothic people have a state of mind and philosophy, and most don't make it overt that they are goths or try to drag others in their beliefs, they are extremely inetlligent, and I find them quite nice.

Nothing is wrong with being goth. Nevertheless, I have met goths who are very pleasant and ones who are downright nasty (perhaps you could say that the nasty ones are 'poser' goths but couldn't you say that about every clique or labeled identity?). Anyways there is nothing entirely wrong with being goth, or being a skater, punk, preppie, teenybopper, etc. whatever, except for the fact that it is an easy way out to quickly fit in and discourages creative thought (transforms you into another robot for the sake of popularity, peace of mind, etc.) I feel somewhat silly talking about high school 'cliques', but anyways lol. Some cliques, by default or by definition of what they are like or what they stand for, are stuck-up, and others are mellow or aggressive or hostile. They are all unique, but what they have in common is that they offer people a safe haven in which they can be labeled with the desired traits.

In my opinion, all these are damaging, although probably a necessary phase in growing up, simply because they put limits on your creative mind, and may limit your growth and actions (i.e. who you talk with 'because talking with other groups is forbidden or something' or what activities you engage in) and in essence limit your freedom (also in terms of developing as a person) and ability to explore.

Some teenagers but not all are very disrespectful of people authority and property. I think, being a parent myself, that allot of this behaviour stems from the home and some of the laws governing how parents can raise their kids and not for the likes of MTV. How often have you heard of kids sueing their parents etc because they don't like the way they are disciplined. Don't get me wrong I do not agree with physically abusing kids but there has to be an element of discilpline and respect instilled from a young age. I am sure that if all of us who are now adults and even parents look back objectively we will see we were all a little rebellious, it's part of being a teenager.

Some goths are smart, some goths aren't. And almost all teenagers go through a phase where they need attention, whether they dress up in black capes and horns or wear Britney Spears outfits. The goth that lives right across from me is extremely close-minded and unwilling to accept facts and develop or grow as a person. Your label or so-called group that you belong to just isn't as important as the individual inside, just as the style you 'belong' to isn't as important as your spirit or attitude. Funny how such cheesy BS can still make so much sense. :karate:

  • 2 years later...

To bring back life to a dead topic but this sums up teens pretty well

Cordelia: Well, does looking at guns make you wanna have sex?

Xander: I'm seventeen. Looking at linoleum makes me wanna have sex.
