Depending on your organisation yes you can spar quite early on....

About the weight loss, etc.

Most active martial arts will help you get fitter, but its really about putting the effort in training hard, and training outside of the dojang and your lessons.

Good luck with the training, and most of all enjoy!!!

As far as sparring...some TKD organizations allow sparring as early as you want to start, some require you wait until your 3rd or 4th belt promotion.

If you want to lose weight, get that 6-pack, etc, TKD alone will not do it. Sorry, but I know from years of seeing people think that they just have to go to class a few times a week, throw some punches and kicks, and in a month they'll look like me...oops, I mean Mr Universe.

Good luck, and let us know what TKD organization you will be under (ATA, ITF, WTF, etc)

(d)All of the above

Most schools I have trained at do not allow you to spar until yellow belt (usually 6 months of training minimum) for safety reasons but I have also been in a few that let you go at white belt. It depends. Either way you should have fun!!!

At my school, we did no-touch sparring until yellow belt, when we did light-touch without equipment and with gear on pretty much as hard as you'd like as long as you don't injure/ kill yourself or partner.

You only get out of it what you put in to it.

Hope you end up liking TKD !

1) It gives me confidence, strength, agility and a sense of peace.

2) You will initially lose weight, and if your instructor emphasizes sit ups, yes you will get a six pack. Whether or not you can SEE the six pack depends on if you have a good diet, do exercise outside the dojang, etc. to get rid of the fat layer over the abs.

3) Our students do one step sparring for the first three belts, then at their 4th belt they can start free sparring with protective gear. Your mileage may vary, some schools toss you into the ring from day one.

Hope you like Tae-Kwon Do I started at twelve and loved it...still do :P

I was allowed to spar as soon as I started, you have to have equipment before you can go on to contact sparring though.

A definite benefit is flexibility and I agree with what other have said; you have to train by yourself as well as with the TKD to get that six pack.

It's worth it though!!!

Good luck in TKD or any other art you choose! As for the six pack you must understand that TKD alone (or any MA) wont do it. It takes a certain amount of extra ab work, watching your diet, and genetic predisposition. Some folks may never get the six pack look but dont worry, your stomach muscles will still be strong provided you put in the work.
