TSD Y049 Posted May 19, 2005 Posted May 19, 2005 I know that Tang Soo Do teaches Ho Sin Sool, that were taken out of the art Ho Sin Sool. I have been wanting to learn to either the art of Ho Sin Sool or Hapkido to help me with Ho Sin Sool techniques in Tang Soo Do. This is where you guys come in!! What is the difference between the two?(Ho Sin Sool or Hapkido) TANG SOO!!! & SEMPER FI!!!Dusty Sawyer,Ee Dan, Tang Soo Do,Young Marine Cpl."Those who do not battle for their country do not know with what ease they accept their citizenship in America" Dan Beralis, Veitnam Jouranlist
UpTheIrons Posted May 19, 2005 Posted May 19, 2005 Ho Shin Sul is not an art by itself. It is self defense techniques within Hapkido, Tang Soo Do, or Tae Kwon Do. Each art will have its unique approach to self defense, but that's all it is. There is no "difference" between Ho Shin Sul and TSD or TKD. It is simply each art's way of performing self defense. TSDforChrist Posted May 20, 2005 Posted May 20, 2005 "Ho Sin (or Shin) Sool" is Korean for self defense techniques. Sool = techniques, Ho Sin = protecting or defending the self. Hapkido, however, is a complete art of striking, kicking, and grappling. Many of the kicks will be familiar to you from TSD, but there are some that will take you by surprise, and be totally new. Same with hand striking. Hapkido, in my experience, is very strong on standing grappling, and far exceeded my TSD experience with jointlocks. HKD tends to focus a lot on the wrist, as well. As for ground grappling, well, I'm getting ready to test for my 1st Dan in HKD and we haven't covered it yet, so I'm still not great on the ground. If you have an extra $100 to blow, I'd check out Dr. He-Young Kimm's Hapkido books (you can contact them through https://www.hanmudo.com, I think). The Hapkido I and II are the same book, just laid out differently - It has multiple pictures, well taken, of every technique required up to 5th Dan, but again, neglects groundwork. In Christ,Master Phil Stewart4th Dan Tang Soo Do
TSD Y049 Posted May 23, 2005 Author Posted May 23, 2005 Acully, Up the Irons, Ho Sin Sool is an art by its self. What we see in Tang Soo Do and Tae Kwon Do are exerpts from the art. and I was not worndering about the difference in Tang Soo Do, Tae Kwon Do, and Ho Sin Sool, I was wandering about Ho Sin Sool and Hapkido, hint the name!!!!And thank you for the information TSDforChrist! I found a Hapkido school in a town near me, maybe I can stop by and see what it i like! TKDguy Posted May 25, 2005 Posted May 25, 2005 I do Hapkido and the difference is that they are both self-defense hapkido has more joint manipulation and more throws wherefore the other has more actual strikes but also has some stuff within Hapkido. "Who Dares, Wins"
UpTheIrons Posted May 25, 2005 Posted May 25, 2005 What I have found is that Hapkido seems to teach more joint locks and manipulation (stemming from its aikijitsu) roots. Tae Kwon Do or Tang Soo Do will teach more joint breaking-using a striking or blocking technique to hit and damage the joint as opposed to locking it or setting up a throw. TKDguy Posted May 26, 2005 Posted May 26, 2005 you will have a great time, you get to flip each other around all day!!! and if you r a really wanting to learn to fight this is the martial art , it is made specifically for a self-defence which means they will also have weapon disarming techniques and a lot of them too.have fun! andrew "Who Dares, Wins"
UpTheIrons Posted May 26, 2005 Posted May 26, 2005 Tae Kwon Do has weapons disarming techniques as well. Don't confuse the sport version with the traditional/self defense version.
