I think the underlying message from the UFC today is that you have to be balanced. No ground game? You'll get beat on the ground. Cant strike well? You're gonna eat someone's fist.

The MT/BJJ combo works well because it covers two main ranges of a fight and both styles incorporate effective ring training methods. A Judo/MT,kyokushin/BJJ, or another striking and grappling combo would probably work too.

iM an avid follower of the UFC and MMA in general and from what ive seen dominate lately are strikers (Chuck Liddell, Rich Franklin, Vanderlei Silva) that can grapple (wrestling, BJJ) lately the BJJ guys have been dominated in the stand-up game by people who can defend agains takedowns

I would say kung fu but thats only if you can get proper training... and most people cant.

How many blosom's are on that tree?

It is impossible to count,

The number's continuoulsy change.

You have a valid point, but those aren't good examples. lidell has been wrestling all his life and has been doing bjj for seven years. silva si a bjj black belt. Those two are more than 'strikers that can grapple' - they are very much grapplers.

I bet Chuck Liddell could totally DOMINATE on the ground if he wanted to. He just prefers to stand. Did anyone see how he extricated himself from Vernon White's closed guard in UFC 49. Vernon was doing everything he could to keep Chuck down, but Chuck would let him do nothing of that sort. It takes a lot of skill to brake a tight guard. Break his guard, you're more than halfway to a submission. I've also heard rumors that chuck has a mean knee bar/leg/achilles lock arsenal. He just doesn't get a chance to use it (Lots of 1st round KOs)!

Crucial point: chuck is dominant on his feet BECAUSE of his takedown defense and ground skill.

If it works, use it!

If not, throw it out!

Good point as well, but when was the last time Chuck submitted someone? Or Vanderlei for that matter? Its no secret they can handle themselves on the ground but Chuck has said he would much rather stay on his feet to end the fight

Alot of Kung Fu styles like Wing Chun or Hung gar have movements that would be illigal in the octagon so I know they would have to modify there techniques. I also know that some MMA are cross training Kung Fu, BJJ, Muay Thai. So a few may be using it without anyone knowing

When Royce Gracie started in the UFC he brought a new system, the BJJ, he was invincible, but now that lots of people know about it, it is not so invincible now, i think you should have a balance between ground fighting and stand-up fighting, i think that MT and BJJ would be a killer combo, and most of the fighters in UFC do this, now you HAVE to know some ground fighting or you will be lost

I know that you need ground fighting but they also need a stand up style,so thats why I'm saying why not kung -fu.
