Find a GOOD tattooist and have a chat with him/her. Tell the tattooist that you want a martial arts tattoo - he/she will probably be able to draw you something unique that is personal to you. Don't just get something because someone else thinks it looks good - get what you want. Good luck with it! :)

I want to get a tattoo when I reach brown belt or black belt. The thing about tattooing Japanese characters onto your body is that you wouldn't tattoo those words in English onto your body, it would look lame. So why do it in another language? And then you just have to explain to everyone what they mean. That being said, the only characters I would get tattooed onto me are "ultimate truth." It's just as much a symbol as it is writing. My friend is training to be a tattoo artist. So by the time she has years of experience under her belt and I actually have some skill I'll phone her up. Well, that's the plan anyways.

Get one on your forehead with invisible ink that you can only see at night (because it glows) that says... KARATE and a picture of yourself giving two thumbs up!

I got a martial arts tattoo on my 21st birthday. It's the kanji for Aiki inside a broken circle. It was inspired by the same quote that's in my signature except I interpret it to mean mental and moral strength as well as physical strength. The broken circle is a visual representation of Musashi's Void as well as that sphere O Sensei mentioned

.

It's on my left arm just underneath my shoulder so that it is easliy hidden by a shirt sleeve.

It reminds me that anything that doesn't help me grow is a waste of time and effort which I think is a good message for a tattoo; a permanent reminder to always change and grow.

O Sensei said that everyone has a defined sphere of strength and if you can get them outside that sphere then their strength will disappear. I say, EXPAND YOUR SPHERE!

I think a lot of people get kanji tattoos because, in addition to being words, they're also art. Generally speaking, most people don't consider the English alphabet to be art. And, in my opinion, art always looks better than words as a tattoo.

That said, if you are going to get something in kanji, make absolutely SURE you know what it REALLY means. I have a friend who got a kanji tattoo that, when interpreted one way, meant something that sounded really cool (I forget what it was now). However, a japanese girl pointed out to him that the most common translation for it was "bad at relationships". So be careful. :)
