fallen_milkman Posted July 26, 2005 Posted July 26, 2005 Well, he is always first to tell you he is a fighting monk, not a religious monk. The two are very different. I understand what you mean, but not everyone is cut out for the life celibacy and such. 36 styles of danger
Muaythaiboxer Posted July 26, 2005 Posted July 26, 2005 true but a monk is a monk to me if im not mistaken the fighting monks where suposed to keep celibate to. dont get me wrong i think shi yan ming is a very good martial artist and a very good person. i also think i hurd he is the sparing champ of china or something like that i dont know if that is true but it would mean he could actually fight (provided it was full contact) and not just a form expert he knows like over 100 forms! Menjo Posted July 27, 2005 Posted July 27, 2005 Shi Yan Ming isn't much of a monk anymore.thats too bad though "Time is what we want most, but what we use worst"William Penn
ovine king Posted July 27, 2005 Posted July 27, 2005 Christ almighty.Monks were not allowed to drink alcohol, it being one of the big nonos. No women. No alcohol. No killing. No gambling. No lying. earth is the asylum of the universe where the inmates have taken over.don't ask stupid questions and you won't get stupid answers.
Menjo Posted July 27, 2005 Posted July 27, 2005 does anyone know what penalties would follow if a monk broke these rules? "Time is what we want most, but what we use worst"William Penn
ovine king Posted July 27, 2005 Posted July 27, 2005 Punishment was not a fixed thing. From what i recall, traditional punishment ranged from extra training, copying more scripture, having to do extra alms rounds and only in the worst cases in the monk expelled. How you were punished also depended on who you were outside of the temple before becoming a monk. If you were a heavy gambler and you broke the gambling rule, the likely punishment would be something that would aim to get you to think more and keep your mind focussed something other than gamblingi.e scripture copying. If you were a violent person, you weren't likely to be told to do more training. earth is the asylum of the universe where the inmates have taken over.don't ask stupid questions and you won't get stupid answers.
Muaythaiboxer Posted July 29, 2005 Posted July 29, 2005 if a monk breaks celibacy he is expelled from the order of monks, but still attende the temple. i actually spent a couple weeks last year in as an assistant to the monks and let me tell you these guys are really really disaplened but these are theravada monks not shaolin monks but i still know that drinking is very very against buddhism. Menjo Posted July 30, 2005 Posted July 30, 2005 ok thanks, but i gotta ask....were the monks friendly? "Time is what we want most, but what we use worst"William Penn
Muaythaiboxer Posted July 30, 2005 Posted July 30, 2005 not friendly but by no means rude they dont talk much, i have to say the only time i hurd a monks voice is when i asked a question or they where chanting sutras. but when they do talk they are friendly we even had a bigot and his group come to our temple and give a hate speech threw a loud speaker and all the monks did was smile and go inside (i had a very hard time not hitting the guy) Fist visible Strike invisible
Menjo Posted July 30, 2005 Posted July 30, 2005 lol it would drvie me nuts if everyone was so quiet for so long "Time is what we want most, but what we use worst"William Penn
