I have seen several websites that offer a tour of the temples, training at the temples, book from the temples, etc. Are any of these real? I would really like to vacation there and possibly train for a day or two while there (in the far future, of course). Does the temple even allow tourists and part time trainees?

shaolinbooks.com offers a whole long list of books for sale from Shaolin, but are they legit? http://shaolinbooks.com/index5w.htm

Thanks.

I have also wondered about a trip for some good training. That thought left my mind about as fast as i got it. I would be wanting some really good training but get some watered down verson of MA's. I think a person would need an "in" if you are going to go. THink how long it took to leak all the MA's over here.

That's a very good point. I know that they still train hard though. Even if we couldnt learn the 'secrets' of the ancient arts, maybe we could just get in a good weeks training with some really highly trained monks or something.

It's a stop on my trip in China for summer 2006. Well, it's the meat of the trip. I am hoping to check out the wushu schools there, they train very hard even if it is not the legendary 36 Chambers we like to see in movies.

The game of chess is much like a swordfight; you must think before you move.

Shaolin is pretty much dead in China. Most of the better monks left it a long time ago, and spread the arts through the rest of Asia, Europe, America, and Canada. Even most of the training is controlled by the government, and moved to the nearby town (I forget the name). Basically, you're better off seeking out training elsewhere. Trust me. This was a big dream of mine, to study at the Shaolin temple. Truth is, visiting it for historical value is a much better reason to go there nowadays.

Might wanna check this site out though. Still not sure what too think of it, but it seems pretty legit. http://www.usashaolintemple.com/

Basically, they are supposedly raising money to build a new temple in upstate New York. I hope it happens. I also desire Shaolin training, but not in wushu like they teach now. No offense to others, but wushu just isn't my thing.

The reason I say what i said, My Sifu has been there and done that. He started to get "the good stuff" and the guards of the same style came over and talked to the monk( could be wrong) and the monk did not finish what he started. He went back to the norm. Ask your Sifu if he/she knows of anyone you can see when you go. I think a person would stand a better chance of getting some good info that way.

If we go to watch a UFC match then that is what we get. If we have an "in" then we might get to meet a few.
