ShotokanKid
It doesn't make too much sense to say that wrestling in a gi is a martial art and wrestling in tights is not. Muay Thai Kickboxing doesn't wear a gi and it's a martial art because it's an Asian for of combat or however the definition put it. "What we do in life, echoes in eternity.""We must all fear evil men. But there is another kind of evil which we must fear most, and that is the indifference of good men." Sengra
Fencing is a martial art. It involves the same principles as other armed and unarmed martial arts. I have trained with both unarmed MA's and fencing and i can see many similarities with their principles. Um, Fencing is a WESTERN martial art... The stronger swordsman does not always win. Why_Worry
Fencing is a martial art. Think about it, odds are that if an average kendo or kumdo practitioner and an average fencing practitioner fought each other with real swords (i dont know why you would be giving such people real swords unless they are really experienced practitioners) and fought to the death (Still dont recomend this either) i would put half my money on each so when the fencer stabs the kendo practitioner and the kendo guy chops the other guy in half and they both die i win both ways. Would you really like to face a fencer? I mean its not as practical for the most part when tehre are more than oen person and odds are not as many people practice it as long but there are probably some (and it usually doesnt have the spiritual aspect which is why i prefer asian martial arts) but in a one on one duel between the two i would bet they are both gonna hit the ground unless one has a lot longer reach. Well actually if i could only bet on one i would bet on the kendo practitioner or kumdo if thats there because i think those are more effective as they have the spiritual and discipline aspects and other stuff liek that (chi/ki/qi too) but they can all be effective. White Warlock
they used fencing with sabers the foil is just for safety basically like kenjutsu is with the bokken ppl have a miscomception that europe only had the big Knight swordsWell, the foil and epee existed because it presented a viable alternative to outright force. If you wish to think about it, fencing is the Western aikido of swordplay. It was devised to exploit the 'gaps' in armor. To puncture and to manuever. An apt example of fencing can be found in the movie, "Rob Roy."
