G95champ Posted July 9, 2005 Posted July 9, 2005 I could see myself using a spear hand espically in close combat. (where I could find the soft target) (General George S. Patton Jr.) "It's the unconquerable soul of man, and not the nature of the weapon he uses, that ensures victory."
Menjo Posted July 9, 2005 Posted July 9, 2005 same here, but in life in death I might not think to use it becuase i probably wouldn't be thinking to clearly... "Time is what we want most, but what we use worst"William Penn
yamesu Posted July 14, 2005 Posted July 14, 2005 Thats what training is for,to drum movement into a reflex action, via repetition.Thinking takes up too much valuble time in a violent situation.A 1/4second wasted may be a lot more than just a 1/4second wasted, if you catch my drift. Its a shame that most MA schools focus on drilling moves like basic punch/kick for tournament, when NihonNukite-Jodan(Spearhand, 2fingers to the eyes,) is so much more effective for real defence.Spearhand is great technique, although be carefull where/when you use it, as it can cause perminant muscle-organ damage to target. "We did not inherit this earth from our parents. We are borrowing it from our children."
elbows_and_knees Posted July 14, 2005 Posted July 14, 2005 much more effective than what? If you hit someone in the throat with a spearhand, the fight may be over. If you hit someone in the jaw and knock them unconscious, the fight will be over. Either way, the fight is over. Now, what happens, when you throw the spearhand and he begins to duck, causing you to hit a hard surface like his chin or forehead?
yamesu Posted July 15, 2005 Posted July 15, 2005 I can break a single board with Yohon-Nukite, (4 finger spearhand,) so Im not all that worried about hitting hard surfaces.Ever been hit by a Kubotan in the forehead? All the force of a punch concentrated into an area of about 1/4square-inch. Ouch.Jodan-Nukite should be directed to the EYES of an opponent.Sending someone blind is malicious damage, killing someone by crushing their jugular is Murder/Manslaughter. "We did not inherit this earth from our parents. We are borrowing it from our children."
elbows_and_knees Posted July 15, 2005 Posted July 15, 2005 a kubotan does not have breakable joints like your finger does... I realize WHERE it should be directed, but the REALITY is that you might miss that target. EDIT: Oh, that was in response to hitting them in the throat? If it's life or death, who cares. if it's TRULY life or death, you will be justified in doing so.
Ottman Posted July 19, 2005 Posted July 19, 2005 Also having broken boards with spear hand strikes, as well as having been unsuccessful at breaking with the same technique, I would not ever use it in combat for two reasons that have been mentioned previously.1: If I am accurate enough I will seriously hurt someone, or kill them.2: If I am not accurate, I will break (at least sprain) my fingers.Combine these two and I don't ever have a reason to use this technique. Menjo Posted July 27, 2005 Posted July 27, 2005 at the very least if my spearhand missed his neck id go for his eye... "Time is what we want most, but what we use worst"William Penn
Daedalus Posted July 30, 2005 Posted July 30, 2005 I can break a single board with Yohon-Nukite, (4 finger spearhand,) so Im not all that worried about hitting hard surfaces.Ever been hit by a Kubotan in the forehead? Boards have nothing to do with fighting they only have to do with board breaking technique and self-esteem building. Peace and may God be with you...Deus Ex Remake
Menjo Posted July 30, 2005 Posted July 30, 2005 I think they have a little to do with fighting, it makes a fighters knuckles more conditioned and that can be very useful in a fight, however i dont think breaking boards myself is very practical "Time is what we want most, but what we use worst"William Penn
