How many tournaments a year do you compete in? What type?

I compete in WTF TKD, which is Olympic style competition, but we also do forms. From 1997 - 2003 I was doing 4 to 6 a year. Then last year I only did one, and this year I only have two so far. The competition is thinning out in the over 35 division.

Kuk Sool tournaments: Forms, techniques, sparring, weapons, self defense, and grappling/sparring. I like the grappling/sparring the most (use to wrestle, and its still in my blood).

I only competed in 2 this year, both in the spring. There were two in the fall that I could have competed in, but with only a few weeks of experience at that time, I figured I'd wait a while ;)

They're all collegiate shotokan karate tournaments; I've done kata and kumite both times, and threw in a team kata at my most recent one.

The area I live in does not have a lot to offer for tournaments, but every year there is a big sporting festival where people from all over the state come to compete, the martial arts tournament held at this time is pretty much our only regular tournament, and our school usually has good representation at it.

I go to about 10 or more...usually place in top two...I should slow down a bit...the lady is getting tired of the trophies all over the place :karate:

Mike, do you have to travel out of state in order to do that many? I know I couldn't find more than six or seven a year in Louisiana. I know some folks around here that travel to Texas or Oklahoma to get more tournaments in. I've only traveled out of state for National Championships.

There are quite a few tournaments in the Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan area. The Diamond Nationals are held in Minneapolis. I know there are a couple in Hurley, WI, a couple in the upper penninsula, some in Superior, WI, and some in Duluth, MN. I'm positive that there are several put on in Milwaukee, Madison, and Green Bay as well which would be much closer to Mike. If you're willing to drive a bit you can easily go to about a tournament a month in that area. They won't be massive, but they will be pretty good size and the competition is usually diverse because of the area covered.

yeah, I sometimes go to Il, but usually stick to Wisconsin. My school is the governing body for our tournament association, so I usually get a heads up and a ride there.

This year I took some time off and only competed in 5 tournaments. This year I want to take state again (I am the 2004 Az state sparring/forms champion for the ATA in my age group), as well as qualify for ATA Worlds, so I will probably go to about 12-14 tournaments.
