At the school that I come from, grappling is officially incorperated into testing requirments at around red belt, which means that by at least green belt we start practicing it in class. We begin with teaching simple principles of getting to your stomach, then to your knees to try to escape. three60roundhouse Posted February 19, 2002 Posted February 19, 2002 Cory...going to your stomach is usually not a good idea - it gives the other guy clean shots where you can't see and leaves the door wide open for all sorts of chokes and stuff. IN regular classes at my dojang, we learn some of what Cory said - we learn how to kick/punch from certain positions, some easy escapes from the mount, how to get someone in your guard, and how to stand up. My TKD instructor, who also trains in BJJ, has started a BJJ program for kids ages 8-14, and we are still learning the basics and stuff, but a lot of the more senior students are starting that. 1st dan Tae Kwon DoYellow Belt Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu16 Years OldGirls kick butt!

How would you suggest getting back to your feet then? Doing a kip up? Levitation? Unless I'm mistaken, to get to your feet you need a solid base, to get to a solid base you need to get to your knees. Check out any basic BJJ tape for the way to do this - if that's not available just yell & I'll type out a full description. SBN Doug Posted February 19, 2002 Posted February 19, 2002 Hey guys, my original post was not intended to have opinions of the system thrown in. I was just interested in comparing/contrasting the different KOREAN systems. Taezee may get mad at me, but I'm as guilty as the next guy for having thought of TKD as mainly kicks. Since Kuk Sool Won depends heavily on grappling, as does Hapkido, I was interested in hearing more when someone said there was grappling taught in TKD. I'm not looking for ratings of its effectiveness compared to a pure grappling art. Does anyone know how Tang Soo Do compares to the above three Korean systems? SBN Doug Posted February 20, 2002 Posted February 20, 2002 Hey Taezee, that's good to hear. Kuk Sool Won is probably closer to Hapkido than TKD. However, we do learn a lot of the same jumping, spinning, and jump-spinning kicks. We just don't learn them until a more advanced level. We also do not do a lot on the ground, but we do have enough to counter being taken to the ground and get back up. Kuk Sool Won - 4th danEvil triumphs when good men do nothing.
