kotegashiNeo
I have graded to shodan in okinawan goju ryu and I have recently had a falling out with my sensei one that will never be sorted out. Now I am left with the option to train in a different art altogether or attend another school that does goju. I have visited a beautiful aikido dojo it has real tatami mats and the instructor is godan and fully acredited in yoshinkai aikido. I guess my question is what does everyone think about: A) How Challenging the transfer from goju to aikido will be. B) For previous Aikidoists what was there opinion of the art. I don't want an aikido beatdown i wouldn't be taking the art for self defense purposes I have kickboxed for years and okinawan goju is a great art for self defense incounters. Aikido seems to be a very spritial art and that is what appeals to me Kisshu fushin oni te hotoke kokoro
CheekyMusician
I trained in Aikido for a few weeks. I really enjoyed the art, but unfortunately didn't like the club I was training at.It definately is a very spiritual art, which is part of what put me off it, ultimately. As a Christian I didn't feel totally comfortable bowing to a make-shift shrine of O' Sensei that was set up at the club I went to, but it definately is a very beautiful art and I think it would be useful for self-defence if a practitioner had practiced it long enough. Smile. It makes people wonder what you've been up to.
dtstiachi
kotegashiNeoTry it for a few classes and see what you think. It would never hurt to experiment and try something new. GhostlySykanRyu
I would personally give Aikido a try..."I have recently had a falling out with my sensei one that will never be sorted out."That's too bad. I'm not saying that this is the case, but don't let your pride ruin your training... To condemn the art of another is to condemn your own as well. We all have the same origin. y2_sub
Aikido is a great art , it sure is spiritual , and verry effective in self defense , however, it requires a lot of training and dedication , but after all any MA does ..I had some differences with my kyokushin sensei b4 , so i moved on to Muay Tai for about 4 month (untill i found another Kyokushin dojo who was suitable for me ) , one must always search for other options . what i am saying is go for it Moon might shine upon the innocent and the guilty alike
jedimc
when I transfered from Karate to Aikido , I started to learn the movements and techniques but it wasn't easy, I am starting to get the hang of it now but I have only been doing it for a few months.everyones different you might find it easy to learn. http://jedimc.tripod.com/ma.html - what MA do you do, this is my poll. Chaz
Aikido is actually the only japanese art that appeals to me. I belive strongly in highly fluid and dynamic arts, I've read books about it but have never practiced. My reasons for not taking it have to do with its effectivness for self-defense. In my opinion of course... JusticeZero
*shrugs* It's a favorite among police officers, i've heard. It can be very effective if you can find a teacher who isn't "fluffy cloud". malanovaus
Yes, give Aikido a try, it couldn't hurt. From what I have observed from studying aikido classes at the dojo I attend, the techniques are literally hidden applications of Goju-Ryu techniques. So I would say it is definately worth a try.
