EternalRage Posted April 23, 2005 Posted April 23, 2005 I study under grandmaster clingan who sudeyd under gramndmaster hwang kee and grandmaster yi.There were 15 difrent kwans. And if the history is right on the link between tsd and tsd thean way does tkd look so diffrent i do not understand i dont see how the arts are even connected anymore .Thay look so diffrent. But thean agen i am just a beginner. In my opinion, there is not much connecting the two besides history. TKD is evolving fast into one of the world's most popular sports. TSD is evolving a little slower. There are now numerous TSD associations and organizations, with a myriad of schools under each banner, all teaching their interpretations of Hwang Kee's original Tang Soo Do. The two arts have different goals and aims and ultimately are two different expressions of Korean culture.
karatekid1975 Posted April 24, 2005 Posted April 24, 2005 I study under grandmaster clingan who sudeyd under gramndmaster hwang kee and grandmaster yi.A bit off topic here .... tsdshep, are you talking about Grandmaster Ki Yun Yi? If so, that was my old TSD grandmaster.Ok, back on topic ..... I'm not much into the history (or just didn't research it enough), but I heard the same as tufrthanu. But then again, everywhere you go to read history, they all have their own version. So, I really didn't get into that part (history) of MA. Laurie F
tsdshep Posted April 24, 2005 Author Posted April 24, 2005 yes karate kid the same gm yi.I am truly happy too finaly find someone on here who truly studed tradishonl tsd under a true grandmaster. You find so many masters and gm out there who dont desireve it and dont stick too tradishon.I think beang that you studeyd under gm yi you can see my problem on how tkd guys want too clame are arts or pretty much the same yes we have simaler influencec but we are very diffrent. But i was mistaking gm clingam said there are 15 diffrent kwans today but you were right there were origanly only 5.So i apoligze for putting false statement up .Nextime ill make shure i got the facts befor i run my mouth.also karate kid what was it like training with master yi.
karatekid1975 Posted April 25, 2005 Posted April 25, 2005 Actually I didn't train under GM Yi, but my instructor was his student. I have talked with GM Yi once or twice. He is a nice guy and very smart when it comes to TSD. Check out his website https://www.imahq.net . Go to the bottom and click on East Coast Karate. That was my old school (I'm actually in the adult class pic .... that site needs to be updated LOL). If I didn't have to move, I'd still train there Laurie F
tsdshep Posted April 25, 2005 Author Posted April 25, 2005 Well tsd is not evolving into a sport at all.so wile tkd is and i am glad for it for the art.do not compare tsd too it in that aspect pls.As i said my instrutor traned with gm hwang kee in korea and we do not phocas on sport at all. so ant org or assoc who is is not teaching tradishonl tsd. I can GARENTIE that.MY instructor was co founder of all american tsd assoc and he left theam for that reason i belave he was also vice presadent at one time of internahoal but not shure.
rmclain Posted April 25, 2005 Posted April 25, 2005 YMCA Kwon Bup = Ji Do Kwan. The original kwans were all formed between 1944 and 1947. Choi's Oh Do Kwan was not formed until 1954.No, YMCA Kwon Bup was not the Ji Do Kwan. The YMCA Kwon Bup was started by Byung In Yoon, who taught at the Ji Do Kwan for about 1 year, before opening his own school, the YMCA Kwon Bup which later became Chang Moo Kwan. R. McLain
tufrthanu Posted April 25, 2005 Posted April 25, 2005 You are correct. I was confusing it with the Choson Yun Moo Kwan Kong Soo Do Bu (Ji Do Kwan). But my point was the YMCA Kwon Bup was one of the five kwans I listed...in this case Chang Moo Kwan instead of what I put. Long Live the Fighters!
UpTheIrons Posted April 30, 2005 Posted April 30, 2005 However, Won Kuk Lee was the first to teach what he called Tang Soo Do. Hwang Kee and the others followed suit, some using different names. There were originally 5 Kwans. By the time of the founding of the KTA, there were 9 recognized. These 9 became the official KTA kwans. Their joining together became what we call Tae Kwon Do. Queen Padme: "So this is how Democracy dies-with thunderous applause."Annikin Skywalker: "You're either with me or against me!"Obi-won Kenobi: "That is the Way of the Sith!"
TSD Y049 Posted April 30, 2005 Posted April 30, 2005 Not all of the kwans followed, Grand Master Hwang Kee wanted his art/organization to remain seperate and he had to fight for the right to remain that way because the Korean government were the ones combing the kwans not the kwans themsevels. Also, before Won Kuk Lee tuaght under the name Tang Soo Do it was called Hwa Soo Do Moo Duk Kwan, Hwa Soo Do meaning art of the flowering hand. In the 60's, the time Tae Kwon Do was created, the organization renamied the art Soo Bahk Do, th Tang Soo Do schools that wanted to remain Tang Soo Do broke off and built all of the organizations we have today. Several Soo Bahk Do masters split off also and that is how we got so many organizations in the U.S. TANG SOO!!! & SEMPER FI!!!Dusty Sawyer,Ee Dan, Tang Soo Do,Young Marine Cpl."Those who do not battle for their country do not know with what ease they accept their citizenship in America" Dan Beralis, Veitnam Jouranlist
tufrthanu Posted April 30, 2005 Posted April 30, 2005 Once again the term Taekwondo was officially adopted in 1955 NOT the 60's. Long Live the Fighters!
