I know this question is played out but can someone explain the belt order of Soo Bahk Do And how long it takes to achieve each one.

My instructor tells me this is one of the best karate style to study, is this true?

By the way i did a search for belt order and did not see any for soo bahk do.

Thanks.

Typical Belt order in Tang Soo Do/Soo Bahk Do:

White 10th Gup

Yellow 9th Gup

Orange 8th Gup

Orange 7th Gup

Green 6th Gup

Green 5th Gup

Green 4th Gup

Red 3rd Gup

Red 2nd Gup

Red 1st Gup

Cho Dan Bo - Probationary period before 1st Dan

1st Dan - Black/Midnight Blue

2nd Dan

3rd Dan

4th Dan (Master Ranking) (Black or Midnight Blue Belt with a Red stripe running the length on one side)

5th Dan

6th Dan

7th Dan

8th Dan

Typical progression is 3 months at each of the Gup ranks, about 9 mos. at Cho Dan Bo,... and the number of years between Dan ranks as the one you are going for... so from 3rd to 4th takes an additional 4 years past 3rd Dan...

So,... it typically takes 3 1/2 years to 1st Dan,... 12-14 years total to make master ranks... minimum...

I'm taking this out of the "manual for gups" from the US Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan Federation, Inc. under Grandmaster HC Hwang:

10th gup - white

9th - white with blue stripe

8th - orange

7th - orange with 1 stripe

6th - green

5th - green with 1 stripe

4th - green with 2 stripe

3rd - red

2nd - red with 1 stripe

1st - red with 2 stripes

chodan - midnight blue

with each degree of midnight blue you have corresponding white stripe (ie 2nd dan - 2 white stripe)

10th to 3rd gup - minimum 3 month between gup test

3rd to 2nd - 6 month minimum

2nd to 1st - 6 month minimum

1st to Cho dan - 1 yr minimum

1st dan - more than 42 month required

2nd - 2 or more yr after 1st

3rd - 3 or more yr after 2nd

4th - 4 or more yr after 3rd

5th - 5 or more after 4th

6th - 6 or more after 5th

7th - 7 or more after 6th

Try searching for soo bahk do links, not belt order for soo bahk do. also soobahkdo.com doesn't have any info on testing requirements or belt rankings, you have to go to individual school sites.

Soo Bahk Do is a good system, as long as you find a good teacher. If you get interested in looking for one, ask me about who you find, I might know them.

I've come across the prior mentioned grade order before, but there are also other prominent Tang Soo (Soo Bahk) Do assoiciations that use the following grade order:

White - 10th gup

Yellow - 9th gup

Orange Tag - 8th gup

Orange - 7th gup

Green Tag - 6th gup

Green - 5th gup

Purple - 4th gup

Blue - 3rd gup

Brown - 2nd gup

Red - 1st gup

(The there is the probationary period, some sytles issue a black tag, but no grading takes place at this stage)

Black - 1st dan, assistant instructor

Black - 2nd dan, instructor

Black - 3rd dan, senior instructor

Black - 4th dan, master (often with red stripe running through centre of belt)

The more I train, the more I see the errors in my technique :(

All associations that add belt colors other than White, Yellow, Orange, Green, Red and Black (including Midnight Blue), are offshoot organizations... Including the WTSDA, of which I think you are speaking of.

The old progression was White, Green, Red, Black (MN Blue). That is why colored trim is not added to the Dobahk until 6th Gup... It was the first color belt under the old system.

Orange was added in the late 60s, early 70s,... and Yellow was added in the mid to late 1970s. The Orange and Yellow belts were added primarily for westerners, who were typically less patient when it came to promotions.

Other offshoot organizations added other belt colors to further break down the 10 gup levels with individual belt promotions (one for each level). It tends to be a "value added" marketing thing, rather than for reasons of curriculim. There are always 10 gup levels and they typically are learning the same things from organization to organization (with slight variation).

It probably follows the path the Eternal Rage has posted above.

10th gup - white

9th - white with blue stripe

8th - orange

7th - orange with 1 stripe

6th - green

5th - green with 1 stripe

4th - green with 2 stripe

3rd - red

2nd - red with 1 stripe

1st - red with 2 stripes

chodan - midnight blue

with each degree of midnight blue you have corresponding white stripe (ie 2nd dan - 2 white stripe)

Ours is the same, but our time in grade system works as follows:

10th to 2rd gup - minimum 3 month between gup test

2rd to 1st - 6 month minimum

1st to Cho dan - 9 month minimum

2nd - 2 or more yr after 1st

3rd - 3 or more yr after 2nd

4th - 4 or more yr after 3rd

5th - 5 or more after 4th

6th - 6 or more after 5th

7th - 7 or more after 6th

As you can see there are very few variations form yours, EternalRage. We also use a black belt aside from midnight blue!!

Why is the time limit so important? I dont mind waiting cause i love tending class and learning but If you can do the requierments (CORRECTLY) (forms, cross hand grabs, sparring, breaking) then why is time so important? Or is the time thing more of a guidline rather than a rule?
