Does anyone else have a TKD spirit at their school? Mine goes,

1. Be loyal to your nation.

2. Be obedient to your parents.

3. Be loveable to your husband or wife.

4. Be honorable to your friends.

5. Never retreat in battle (sir!)

I wasn't sure if it was just my dojang that has that, or if anyone has something similar. :karate:

When peace, like a river, attendeth my way. When sorrows like sea billows roll. Whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to say, 'It is well, it is well with my soul.'

Those sound a lot like the 5 codes of Tang Soo Do.

1. Loyalty to Country

2. Obedience to Parents

3. Honor Friendships

4. No Retreat in Battle

5. In fighting, choose with sense and honor

Yea, that's what it was in my old TSD dojang, isshinryu5toforever. In TKD, we don't use "codes." We say the student oath (which the last three are the same as the TSD student oath), of course, but we learn about the tenets.

Our Dojang his three tenants which we repeat after every class:

When I can't do it, I shall persevere until I can,

When I lose, I shall persevere until I win,

When I don't understand, I shall persevere until I do understand.

And lets just say I do alot of persevering.... heheh

Our school has "the student oath" that the teacher and students recite, call and response-style, after each class. Part of it goes:

"I shall observe the tenets of Tae Kwon Do:

Courtesy

Integrity

Perseverence

Self-Control

Indomitable spirit

I shall be a champion of Freedom and Justice

and I shall build a more peaceful world."

I've seen some of these "tenets" listed elsewhere.

I think it's important that we all hear and say them! Of course, it is more important that we see them being practiced at our dojang, and that we are encouraged to practice them more, because they are hard.

This was the code of the Hwa Rang Dan,... more originally:

1) Be Loyal to your King or Master

2) Be Obedient to your parents and elders

3) Honor Friendship

4) Never Retreat in Battle (literally,... never back up)

5) Never make an unjust kill

It's been "reinterpreted" over the years,... reinvented for a new time...

Variations and additions abound, but the theme is usually the same. It's all about having honor, bravery and indonimable spirit.

We learn the tenets as well at my school, and also the '5 D's':

Desire

Drive

Discipline

Determination

Dedication

No wait...that's the Boy Scouts. :D

Before each TKD class the students recite:

Seek perfection of character

Live the way of truth

Endeavor

Be faithful

Respect your seniors

Refrain from violent behavior

I like your school's student oath, Kicks. It suggests that martial arts are a way of life, not just a sport. That's the way I view it.

Opening of class

"I will practice in the spirit of Tae Kwon Do, with courtesy for fellow students, loyalty for my instructors, and respect for my juniors and seniors" (Preceded and ended with "Sir" or "Ma'am")

Ending of class

"I shall live with perseverance in the spirit of TKD, Having honor with others, integrity within myself, and self-control in my actions."

Our youth oath:

"Each day I will live by honoring my parents and instructors, Practicing to the best of my abilities, And having courtesy and respect for everyone I meet!"
