CapitalKarate Posted May 14, 2005 Posted May 14, 2005 What's it look like? Is it effective anyway? Joshua Brehm-When you're not practicing remember this; someone, somewhere, is practicing, and when you meet them, they will beat you.
MMACHAMP Posted May 15, 2005 Posted May 15, 2005 I dont understand why people think going to the ground in a street fight is bad. I have never been in a street fight or witnessed one in which more than one person got involved. Every street fight i has witnessed has been 1 on 1...so why would it be a bad idea to take them to the ground? Black belt? Yes i have a black belt but that belt only covers 2 inches of my butt. The rest i got to cover on my own.Royce Gracie - Jiu-jitsu master
glockmeister Posted May 15, 2005 Posted May 15, 2005 I think it depends on what u want it for. There is a big difference between a mutually combative streetfight and a typical delf defense situation like someone trying to rob you.Two people who get into an argument at a bar and say: "Let's take it outside." is one thing. (I would holp most martial artists would be more beyond that stage)And two guys wanting to knock you over for your wallet is another. In the case of something like that. Most muggers usually travel with more than one, and there is also good chance they will have a weapon. In either case, I don't think grappling would be as useful as in a streetfight where two people are trying to show off their testosterone levels. "You know the best thing about pain? It let's you know you're not dead yet!"http://geshmacheyid.forumotion.com/f14-self-defense
MMACHAMP Posted May 15, 2005 Posted May 15, 2005 Although i respect your opinion...i definately dont agree. I think grappling is perfect in a streetfight situation where two people are trying to show off their testosterone levels. You just take them to the ground and beat their brains out. Black belt? Yes i have a black belt but that belt only covers 2 inches of my butt. The rest i got to cover on my own.Royce Gracie - Jiu-jitsu master

You just take them to the ground and beat their brains out.yeah, but if you take one to the ground, his buddy will beat your brains out, well possibly? doesnt BJJ teach throws to? or take downs that you dont need to get to the ground? Im brasilian, but live in the united states. Really enjoying martial arts.
kusojiji Posted May 21, 2005 Posted May 21, 2005 Going to the ground in a street fight is a bad idea.so is not learning how to fight on the ground, getting blindsided by a punch then flailing like a fish out of water while you are viciously held down and beaten...It's unfair to make a sweeping generalization like that. Are there alot of times when it a bad idea to go to the ground? yes. Are there times when you have no choice? yes. Are there times when it's a good idea? yes.Great post!
kusojiji Posted May 21, 2005 Posted May 21, 2005 Taking a fight to the ground also means that while you are tying the bad guy up for a submission hold, you may suddenly feel 6 inches of steel going into your kidneys .If I can choose between having a knife-weilding attacker squaring off with me from a couple of feet away, or have positional control of him and his arms from a grappling position, I know which one I'd choose, 'cause I know which one was easier for me in the past.
kusojiji Posted May 21, 2005 Posted May 21, 2005 The thing is that BJJ is groundfighting and not a complete system. So if someone on the street really knows how to fight and all you know is BJJ, well good luck. .You know that's been tried out before, right? What was the name of that...?
