ShadowDancer Posted April 4, 2005 Posted April 4, 2005 Can anyone please tell me of any Judo clubs/schools located in Tennessee, specificly Nashville? I would really appreciate anyone's help on this, or if you can tell me any web sites to help find one/some.thank you, Katerina.
tufrthanu Posted April 4, 2005 Posted April 4, 2005 Well, shadow I looked in the yellow pages for your area and didn's see anything thats specifically judo. But I did see a ton of karate schools which if there are traditional might also teach judo as part of the curriculum. There were also several Jujitsu, AIkido and sport grappling schools that you can check out. Also there were some schools that were general in name like Mitchells Martial Arts that could possibly teach judo. You should check online and see if there are any Judo websites that list dojo's. ShadowDancer Posted April 5, 2005 Author Posted April 5, 2005 Thank you tufrthanu.I don't have access to the resources I would like, so I appreciate your help. As I have oppurtunity, I will seek out more info. -Katerina.
AngryMatt Posted April 5, 2005 Posted April 5, 2005 If you can't find a judo school, definitely hit up the jujitsu dojos. You won't work as many throws, but you will work plenty of solid self-defense stuff. I don't know if you are in it for sport or for self-defense, but getting your basic grappling stuff is essential and then after awhile you can mix in a striking art in case you find yourself in a position where you are against someone who has a solid base (ex: a former high school or college wrestler) "In the void is virtue, and no evil. Wisdom has existence, principle has existence, the Way has existence, spirit is nothingness."-The Book of the Void (A Book of Five Rings)"Men don't start fights, but they do finish them."

ShadowDancer Posted April 5, 2005 Author Posted April 5, 2005 I am actually right now looking for a friend of mine who is coming to town for a few days in May. He is a champion Judo Martial Artist, and training for the olympics. He has been in America for several months and misses training with other Judoists, so I hoped to find somewhere we could go for a day or so. He has told me that he is interested in a Judo school/club specificly, not Jui Jitsu or any other style for the time. I however, will soon be looking for martial arts schools for myself again, and am excited for that prospect. My thanks to all of you who've replied to this. I will use that information for my research -Katerina
pittbullJudoka Posted April 6, 2005 Posted April 6, 2005 Shadowdancer I don't know if you would be willing to drive to Knoxville but I can give to an excelant grappling school to go to. Look at Extremekarate.info they aren't judo. But they have the resources your friend may need they are affiliated with Mr. Gene LaBell and Gokor so they could probably help your freind out.
Bama Crimson Posted April 6, 2005 Posted April 6, 2005 I am near Chattanooga. In Chat if your friend is willing to go that far, Chu's Martial Arts (In Hixson, part of Chat) has a pretty solid Judo school. As pointed out, you could also go to Knoxville (but if you can't tell from my name I have plenty of reason to HATE Knoxville.) I don't know if Knoxville or Chatt is closer to Nashvegas. "If you believe in yourself and have dedication and pride, and never quit, you'll be a winner. The price of victory is high but so are the rewards." -Alabama Coaching Legend Paul "Bear" Bryant.
SevenStar Posted April 7, 2005 Posted April 7, 2005 the state tournament is held in clarksville, just outside of nashville. Also, there is a national level bjj tourney held there yearly. that tourney is held by ed clay, and he has a bjj school in nashville. look up the nashville mixed martial arts academy. If you don't mind the drive to clarksville (about 45 min, if I remember right) then you can check out ft. campbell judo.
