Mr. Mike Posted April 3, 2005 Posted April 3, 2005 I don't have mine up yet, but will within the week...not sure of the brand, as it was my instructor's old one. When a man's fortunate time comes, he meets a good friend; When a man has lost his luck, he meets a beautiful woman.-anonymous
MASIsshinryu Posted April 3, 2005 Posted April 3, 2005 I have tried about 6-7 of them, over the years, and have found little difference in the ones that are available from the larger retailers. I have since resorted to making my own.I can share one "Bad Makiwara" story, though... I had one of them for only about a month, attached to a steel pole in the dojo, when I had a very painful experience. The cotton padding layer appeared to have separated, and my contact knuckles passed through the gap in the padding and struck the backer board (yes, the pole rang). Nothing broken (I'm thankful for the prior years of conditioning), but the damage to the skin and other tissues resulted in what looked like a couple of walnuts packed under the skin! harleyt26 Posted April 5, 2005 Posted April 5, 2005 several of us at my dojo do practice on makiwara. They are the type with a metal bracket fastened to the floor with a purple heart tapered board standing up from it with a Shureido leather pad on top.Our weapons makiwara resembles a lifesize cross made from landscape timbers and wrapped with rope to pad the weapons slightly.they are not only useful for learning to transmit power to the target but are also very good for practicing accuracy and to know what actual contact with a weapon feels like and how the weapon responds to that impact.
