How many different ways do you know to disarm a knife?

Recommended Posts

And... when facing a knife I have always advised people to expect to get cut. Be mentally prepared for that, and it will not have as mush of an impact on you, if/when it does happen. I've seen some pretty bad knife wounds, thankfully nothing fatal, but the psychological impact on the victim has always been significantly greater than the actual injury, at the time.

Too true (I prefer to shoot the person.) Everyone who thinks they can disarm a knife should do this exercise: get a magic marker and give it to someone, even a little kid. See if you can get it from them without getting a mark on you. Then see what happens when someone pretends its a knife and tries to stab you with it. Then remember that the marker has a small tip while a knife has a much larger blade with atleast one side sharp all the way down to the base. You are really better off just shooting them.

Black Gi - $30

Rubber knife - $5

White chalk to rub on blade of knife - $2

Look on face of Gi wearer, after the lines appear on the cloth - Disheartening.

Although I prefer to wear a white gi, I have ablack one for just this reason. Great demo.

Defending against knife attack is pretty hard. I've been taught a couple of ways of knife defence, but I wouldn't really ever like to try them out in real life. It's hard enough when your opponent has a rubber knife, so I should imagine that a real knife would be more difficult.

In one of my classes, we often do a drill where a knife is in the middle of two people, and when the sifu says go, they run for it and try to 'kill' the other person... it's nuts. It's fun in class to do, but also scary because we are not truly skilled with knife fighting and just thinking about how it would be like to do the same drill with someone who knows how to deal with a knife... its scary.. But I love that drill because it reaaally gets your adrenaline up :)
