Goju_boi Posted March 28, 2005 Posted March 28, 2005 Hey I have a qustion for all of the wing chun/wing tsun/ving tzun/etc people.I take Karate at my school but they also offer W.C. and I really want to take it so we went there on one of the nights it's offered. But when the instructor told us about it i was surprised because it was $150 for five weeks(that was with discount since i take karate there) it came with the uniform and some books. Then if u like it u can sign up for more(but long term contract). After that time is over u can only stay if the sifu see's u know your stuff and he want's u to continue(and another long term contract).THEN after that the grandmaster has to evaluate u for instructoship and discipleship. And all of this comes with all thesebooks they even give u books on how to open your own school and how to operate it.Wut I'm asking is do u think its worth it?Because the guy who instructed the instructor is Benny Meng who appears in Kung Fu/tai chi and Sifu Mengs instructor is Garret Gee.And I guess I can be sure they know each other cuz Ive seen pics of them together and he is listed at their website.ohh and the style is Hung fa yi wing chun kung fu , i havent heard about it too much so yeah I'm not sure if i should invest my time and money in that? my school https://www.samuraimartialsports.com and the organization https://www.hungfayi.com https://www.samuraimartialsports.com for your source of Karate,Kobudo,Aikido,And Kung-Fu
Thaegen Posted March 28, 2005 Posted March 28, 2005 Damn that's expensive. I wouldn't do it. I pay 25-30 euro a month for Wing Tsun.
pvwingchun Posted March 28, 2005 Posted March 28, 2005 Hung Fa Yi is a great system of Wing Chun, very precise and technical. But it sounds to me like they are using NAPMA business principles to make money. In short that is charging you for everything under the sun and lots of contracts. Which I don't necessarily agree with. I would get to one of the HFY seminars and see if it is for you, if so then sign up. Wing Chun Kuen Alliancehttps://www.wing-chun.us

pvwingchun Posted March 28, 2005 Posted March 28, 2005 This is how NAPMA suggests that their member schools market to you the "consumer". They have contracts that lock you in to paying whether you are there or not with each contract being a little longer and a little cheaper. Obviously the prices are not that bad it is how they go about it that I do not agree with. I was once associated with a school that was a NAPMA member and this is exactly what they suggested I am not saying that this school is, it may be pure coincidence. I personally do not feel the need to have a student sign a contract. My students aren't consumers or clients they are students I feel no need to lock them into contracts to keep them. You stated up front it was too expensive for the first month of lessons, another thing typical of NAPMA style marketing they charge you a large registration fee when you could buy what they are selling (a uniform and "some" books) for a quarter of the price. Now you are now saying it isn't that bad with the contracts and you are right there but you will be locked in for that duration if you quit. If they truly believe what they are teaching and selling a good "product", which HFY is, there is no need for contracts the students will stay. Wing Chun Kuen Alliancehttps://www.wing-chun.us

pvwingchun Posted March 29, 2005 Posted March 29, 2005 Don't necessarily discount the HFY because of the pricing. Look into it and if you like it see if you can work something out. There is lots of variety in the WC world so if that is a fir for you. Wing Chun Kuen Alliancehttps://www.wing-chun.us
aefibird Posted March 29, 2005 Posted March 29, 2005 You may enjoy training in HFY WC - why not ask if you can have a 'trial' set of lessons at a 'discount'? It might be better for them to reduce their prices just so that you will train, rather than for them to keep with the same price but for you to train elsewhere because it is too expensive.the best thing for you to do would be to have a chat with the Sifu and see what he says. Also, check out other WC schools in the area. You may find that the HFY WC school is the best available to you.Good luck in your search. "Was it really worth it? Only time and death may ever tell..."
