Master Jules Posted March 29, 2005 Posted March 29, 2005 You should always start at the first kata, and work your way up to whichever one youve learned last. Simple as that. ~Master Jules......aka "The Sandman""I may be a trained killer......but Im really a nice guy"
ShotokanKid Posted March 29, 2005 Posted March 29, 2005 Just keep practicing each one. If you practice it right, you'll do it right. Sandan Posted March 29, 2005 Posted March 29, 2005 Have you ever read a book called 5 years one Kata. It's very good! Myself I think the best way to make sure that you are 'fresh' on the Heian Katas is to go along to junior classes when ever possible. Then concentrate on one Kata for yourself and specialise with that one. --Give your child mental blocks for Christmas.
baronbvp Posted March 29, 2005 Author Posted March 29, 2005 Master Jules, you are right. I did just this last night with my renshi's video. Started at Kihon 1, went up to Fyukyu Nidan. Then my son, who is more advanced than I but only 9 years old, started watching the more advanced kata in a later video. But where I was practicing along with renshi in the video, he was just watching and told me, "I already know it, I don't need to practice it." I thought of this thread and said he should practice them all from Kihon 1 on up and he disagreed about going back to the beginning. So I told him that even though I was only a yellow belt, and he's a blue-green, I was going to beat him to black belt since I practicing instead of just watching. I came back to the living room a half hour later and he was practicing his Naihanchi Sandan along with the video.Ahh, motivating kids is great . . . Only as good as I make myself be, only as bad as I let myself be.Martial arts are like kinetic chess. Your move.
JimmyNewton Posted March 29, 2005 Posted March 29, 2005 I practice at least 2 different katas every day, and when time permits, i go through all of them.even if you split it up and do half in the morning, and half before bed, its a good way to start and end your day. Sandan Posted March 29, 2005 Posted March 29, 2005 I spoke with a 8th Dan at a recent course and he does one Kata for 2 weeks and does it 20 times each day with varying levels of speed and strenght... food for thought. --Give your child mental blocks for Christmas.
cathal Posted March 29, 2005 Posted March 29, 2005 I wish I had that kind of time. .The best victory is when the opponent surrendersof its own accord before there are any actualhostilities...It is best to win without fighting.- Sun-tzu
JimmyNewton Posted March 29, 2005 Posted March 29, 2005 theres always time if you make it priority.i mean, maybe not for 20 times, but you can even go through the movements in the bathroom while it work if you had to.
